“Aye, I’ll try my best.”
“Will ye be my flower girl?”
Sarah’s eyes widened into saucers. “Aye!” she cried, jumping on the balls of her feet.
“Oh no,” Ashton feigned disappointment. “I wanted to be the flower girl. I suppose I could be persuaded to accept best man.”
Aleck chortled. “Yer the best man alright. Come, let’s get ye two home.”
Evanna followed Aleck and mounted his horse. He climbed up behind her. His arm snaked around her waist, pulling her securely to him. She felt safe in those arms and knowing they would forever be around her was a giddy notion.
“Ready?” he asked.
“Ready,” she said.
Epilogue
The wedding of Evanna MacLeod and Aleck Bryce had been the most celebrated affair Glenlivet had ever seen. They were married in the grounds under a canopy of summer flowers. Sarah had looked pretty in her new dress, and everyone had complimented the way she carried herself. Lockard and his men had displayed daring arms and feats at the reception dinner, and Laird MacLeod was so happy, he had danced with every man woman and child in the hall.
Day finally done, Evanna was in her new chambers in the East wing removing the pins from her hair. Her negligee was made of sheer white lace and gave tantalizing glimpses of her flesh. She dabbed some lavender water behind her ears, and between her breasts.
Aleck had been accosted by Ashton for another round of drinks. He would be up soon, and she needed to get ready for her husband.
Her husband. Every time she thought of Aleck as her husband, a thrill went through her. They were finally married, finally united as man and wife. Who would have thought this possible? Certainly not her.
She looked at the palms of her hand. Had she really changed her destiny? Or was everything that happened in the winter not the tragedy that Kezia had predicted? Banishing these morbid thoughts from her head, she focused on the present. No one could predict the future. And if Kezia had been so adept at it, she would have known about Vano’s black heart and prevented him from it.
Picking up her brush, she began to brush out the tangles in her hair. She wanted her tresses shiny and lustrous when Aleck came up. She had just gotten all the tangles out when the door opened, and Aleck entered.
He looked as handsome as ever, and he was all hers.
“Ye’ve started without me,” Aleck said.
“I’m only brushing my hair,” she said.
“From now on ye’ll only do that with me. Nae one else is to touch yer hair.” He took the brush from her and started brushing. He took his time on each section, brushing the hair through again and again until each one shone like liquid gold. Only when he was satisfied, did he deem her ready to get up from the chair.
“I thought ye’d be drunk; ye’ve had that many drinks tonight.”
“I’m a Scotsman. We can hold our drink.”
“What else can ye hold?” she asked, teasing him. She unbuttoned his shirt, her fingers grazing his nipples. “Can ye hold yerself from touching me?”
“Dinnae test me, Evanna,” he said, his voice a harsh whisper. “I’ve stayed my hands long enough.” And to prove his point he pulled her to him, his hand pushing the small of her back forward, so she felt the hard bulge in his breeches against her pelvis. “Ye belong to me,” he growled.
Evanna sighed. She ran her hands from his waist up to his strong broad shoulders, going up and down again grazing his nipples till they were taut like the bulge in his breeches. “Ye vex me,” he whispered. “Ye tease me.”
“Is this what ye want?” she asked, slipping one hand on his aching manhood, constricted underneath his clothes.
“I want ye,” he whispered against her ears, his lips pulling on her earlobes. And suddenly Evanna’s feet left the ground, and she was carried to the bed.
Aleck was in control now. He bent in front of her, his shirt open. Evanna thought he would remove his clothes, but he made no such move. Instead, he slipped his hand underneath her negligee and pulled her legs apart.
Evanna was unprepared for what happened next. Aleck ducked his head between her legs and kissed her. She gasped, her back arching, her hips buckling. “Aleck!” she cried. “What are ye doing?”
“Claiming my wife,” he said, kissing her again.
It was such an intimate kiss, a kiss she had never shared with anyone, a kiss she had never imagined possible. His kisses became more insistent, more intense. Her skin was on fire, she was a ball of wet heat. Her hands held his head in place, her hips bucking of their own accord as her inner lips arched up to meet his.
