“It’s a risk we have to take.”
The rest of the men nodded.
“And what about me?” Elspeth asked. “Where will I be while yer breaking Bruce out?”
The men looked at her as if they were seeing her for the first time. It was obvious they had forgotten all about her.
“Bass Rock Castle is no place for a woman!” Simon croaked.
Leo cleared his throat. “Ye’ll wait on shore with Emory and Sean. Our horses and packs will be with ye. Once Bruce is safe ye can tend to his wounds.”
“Are there many?” she asked Simon.
The man swallowed, uneasy. “A few,” he muttered.
“Cowards,” Jeremy snarled.
Big Nate slammed his fist on the table.
“I’m here to help, not take the blame for something I didn’t do.”
“That’s enough,” Leo said. “We all need to calm down and think of Bruce. He needs us working together. Now, let’s get to bed and rest up. I want ye all sharp and on yer toes tomorrow.”
Thus, the meeting ended, but Elspeth’s mind was teeming with questions and anxiety for the coming night. Will they be able to succeed? And how much could they trust Simon Drake? A man who had no loyalty to his country didn’t seem like a person she would bet the safety of her men on.
