“Maybe he’s doing favors for Fae. Who the fuck knows? He could be down there sucking Satan’s cock for all we know.”
“Yeah, not an image I want stuck in my head.” Greyson grimaced in disgust.
“I’ll tell you one thing. That goddamn fleam belongs to Baxter. I feel it in my bones. I don’t know where it came from. But it’s his. He’s a motherfucking demon piece of shit.” Viktor didn’t want to use or hear his name again as a fresh rush of anger twisted through him, as he recalled the scratches. “It did something to Waverly.”
“What?” Rafe asked, concern in his voice.
Viktor sighed and turned to them. “It, uh, it did something. It’s her powers. She’s got these visions. She never used them until recently, but they’re changing. I don’t know why. Maybe something about our bonding kicked things off? Who knows?”
“What’s happening?” Greyson pressed.
“When I first met her, it started right away. But it only happened when she touched me. But now, it’s expanded to objects. When we were in the club, she had a vision when she touched the wall. I got the impression it was more of a feeling. I don’t know. But she knew there were people down there.” Viktor’s stomach turned, as he relived what had happened. “So uh, while I was in the shower, she said she’d wanted to try seeing something with the fleam.”
“I’m guessing it wasn’t good,” Rafe said.
“No. It wasn’t.” Viktor blew out an audible breath. “It fucking scratched her. Left marks. I don’t know how. Maybe it was a kind of dream realm where it could touch her. She said it was a goat-like creature. A demon or something. I don’t know.”
“It touched her from a freaking vision?” Rafe asked.
“Fucking hell.” Greyson sighed.
“Yeah. My guess is that something about her ability brought her there. It was a message.” Viktor looked to Greyson and Rafe. “It’s coming for her. But it’s also coming for me.”
“We should go to New Orleans and ask the High Priestess if she can help,” Rafe suggested.
“Ilsbeth?” Greyson smiled.
“No. The actual High Priestess. Samantha. I’ve heard she’s cool. Let her run the location thing. Scribe. Use that fleam.”
“My protégée is on to something. Once we have the location, we’ll launch an attack. Take out Adam, Ivar and the vampire.”
“What’s their end game, though? Why go through all this?” Rafe asked.
“With Baxter there was no end game. Torture was the only game. Sadistic, brutal cruelty,” Greyson said. “This vampire. This woman. She’s been taught by him. Or maybe she’s just a fan. There’s some sick fucks out there.”
“It could even be someone we know.” Viktor stretched his neck from side to side, recalling the familiar voice. He turned to the fire, his thoughts racing, wrath shooting through his veins. “Doesn’t much matter. I don’t care about her reasons. I’m going to kill her.”
Greyson moved toward the fireplace. “We need to protect Waverly. Who else knows about this place?”
“Literally no one.” Viktor pressed his palm to the cold pumice that had been forged from Mount Hekla. “This is my private sanctuary. No one has ever been here but me…until now.”
“You’ve got staff, though?” he challenged.
“Yeah, but they’ve been with me for years. They’re only allowed to enter when I say they can. This place is pretty isolated. It’s not like most people will be able to get here without being noticed.”
“You’ve got wards set up?” Greyson asked.
“Of course, but you know how that goes sometimes.” A seed of concern was planted in his mind, concerned Waverly might inadvertently divulge their location. “Also, I’ve hidden the fleam. I don’t want Waverly or anyone else to touch it again. Too risky after what just happened.”
“Where is it?” Greyson asked.
“It’s here in the house. In a pandora’s box,” Viktor told him.
“The pandora’s box?” Rafe asked.
“Indeed. I have one of them,” Viktor replied. “Seven exist.”
Rafe looked to Greyson who nodded in confirmation. “He’s right.”
