“This is a big place,” Venom said.
“It’s a good size and I like it. Dad will be by later with my mom to drop off some of my other stuff.”
He couldn’t deny how happy Morwenna appeared to be. They went to see the ranch a few weeks ago, and the agent said it was still on the market, and they were looking for a buyer. Morwenna took one look around and said she’d take it. Since then, she’d been handling all the paperwork and talking with the bank. She knew exactly what she was doing. He wasn’t used to seeing a woman so in control, but then again, Storm was similar, and she was another old lady.
“The kitchen and dining room are a good setup,” he said.
“It’s all a good setup. I’m actually shocked no one has taken this off the market. It’s in a prime location. It looks amazing.”
“I think ‘prime location’ is stretching your reality a little. You’re in the middle of nowhere,” he said.
She chuckled. “Exactly, and that to me is a prime location. Although, I am a little nervous.” She nibbled her lip and moved toward the main dining room window.
He shouldn’t be curious, but when it came to Morwenna, he couldn’t seem to help himself.
“What are you nervous about?”
She let out a little laugh and shook her head. “Don’t worry about it. It’s silly.”
“You might as well tell me now, rather than wait for your parents to arrive. Your dad is always dead set against this, as you know.”
“Okay, fine, fine. It’s just that I’ve never in all my life been alone. I’ve lived with my parents and then I moved in with Bolt, and, well, you know I’ve never been on my own, and I hate to admit this because I’m nearly twenty-six, and it is just insane, but I’m kind of ... a little afraid of the dark,” she said. “And the only problem I see with this place is it’s going to be surrounded by darkness. I didn’t think about this when I took the place, and to be honest, I’ve not really thought about it until last night, my final night with my parents.”
“You’re afraid of being alone?” he asked.
“Yes, and I know that sounds crazy, but I ... this is why I don’t watch horror movies because my head just starts to go in all different directions—”
“It’s a pretty big house,” he said, cutting her off.
“You keep saying that and it’s not exactly helping.”
“How do you feel about having a renter?” he asked.
“A renter? Do you know someone who—”
“Me,” he said.
She was silent and he pretended to have a look around because the truth was, it wasn’t a bad place to live.
“You?” she asked.
“Yeah, it looks good and it’s quiet. I’ve never lived anywhere else but at the clubhouse. Never really had my own space, other than my room. It could be good. You don’t have to admit to your parents you made a mistake, and I can stay here. I’ve got my own room. We can work out a schedule for chores. When I have to be away, you can make some excuse to stay at your parents’ if you’re not ready to stay alone, or you can sneak into my room at the clubhouse. That way, you don’t have to worry about being asked questions.”
“You’d do that for me?” Morwenna asked.
“You’re going to cook, aren’t you? So, I won’t ever need to worry about feeding myself?” he asked.
“No, no, you won’t have to worry about that. I can do all the cooking. I happen to love cooking.”
“And it means you finally have the excuse to take it to the clubhouse, because I can help.”
Morwenna smiled, but it was cut short as they heard her parents’ truck arrive outside.
“You’re going to need to give me an answer.”
“You’re okay with this? You won’t miss the women at the club?”
“If I’m that desperate, I’d go to the club, but I promise I would warn you in advance if I was never not going to be here. Don’t worry, I won’t let you down.”
