But finding out he had paid Owen to leave her would break her heart and destroy what they were building. She might never trust him again, and more than that, she might leave him.
He couldn’t let that happen.
She was his, and he’d do anything to keep her, even break a few laws.
Reece, who was sitting to his left, mumbled a curse, and snapped Sloane out of his thoughts. His friend was looking down at his cell phone, and the hardness in his expression made it clear something was definitely wrong.
Reece suddenly looked in his direction, then glanced back at his phone, and started typing. A second later, Sloane’s phone vibrated on the table, and he snatched it up. He already knew whatever he was about to see, he wasn’t going to like it. He opened the text message and clicked on the link.
Billionaire Sloane Davidson secretly marries a woman half his age.
Ahh hell.
There was a photo of him and Halayna leaving his office building, and he knew the exact day. The day she had shown up wearing white and his engagement ring. The day Marcella had made a surprise visit.
He started reading…
* * *
The billionaire businessman, Sloane Davidson, heir to one of the wealthiest families in Georgia, has always kept his personal life private. So, it’s no surprise he was secretly married recently in Hawaii. Very little is known about his wife, Halayna Tanaka, but a reliable source says she’s much younger than him.
“I think he was tricked into marriage. No way he would marry someone like her. She must be pregnant,” says an anonymous source who is close to the family.
* * *
Anonymous source my ass, Sloane thought as he kept reading. He’d bet his life savings Marcella had everything to do with the article. The more he read, the angrier he got. The author had done their homework, listing information about Halayna’s mother who died during 9/11 and her father’s car accident.
It had to be Marcella. This had to be her doing because some of what was stated in the article, she’d said at his parents’ house the other night. Some of the quotes could’ve also come from his mother, but it was easier to believe Marcella was responsible.
However, before he went after her for leaking this news, he needed to make sure she was the anonymous source. He sent a quick text to his tech guy, Van, asking him to find all he could on the author—Clint Hughes.
Son of a... Sloane’s temper flared. That was the guy Marcella had invited to the family dinner. His ass was a reporter.
Something else Sloane just thought about. He needed to get some security on Halayna. In the meantime, he’d make sure she didn’t leave home without Hershel going with her. At least until they could officially assign someone to her.
Before he could send a text to her and Hershel, Sloane’s phone vibrated in his hand, and Bristol’s name showed on the screen. Normally, when he was in a meeting, he’d let calls go to voicemail, but not when it came to Halayna or Bristol. They didn’t call often while he was working, but when they did, he answered.
Besides, he wanted a break from this meeting, and this was just the excuse he needed.
He stood abruptly. “Excuse me. I have to take this,” he said, lifting his phone, then walked out.
Stepping into the hallway, he headed in the direction of his office.
“Hey, Sis. What’s going—”
“Sloane.” Bristol’s voice cracked, and Sloane stopped in the middle of the hallway, his protective instincts immediately on alert.
“Bri? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
“It—it’s not me. It’s Lanie. She—she’s hurt,” she cried, barely able to get the words out. “There was so much blood… We’re at the hospital.”
Ice ran through Sloane’s veins. Fear twisted around his heart as he gripped the phone tighter, struggling to get air into his lungs. One minute he was near the conference room. The next he was at his executive assistant’s desk telling her to call his driver. He hadn’t even felt himself move.
“Bri, what hospital?”
Thanks to Hershel, Sloane had entered the hospital through an employee only door, bypassing the media who’d camped out near the main entrances.
He had practically sprinted to Halayna’s room, knowing he needed to calm the hell down, but he couldn’t. Not until he got to his wife and saw with his own eyes that she was okay. Hershel, who’d been at the hospital, had assured him she was going to be fine, and Bristol was with her, but Sloane hadn’t been satisfied.
