Lennox

So, how mad is your brother?

Ayla

On a scale of one to “who gave this man our address?” Let’s just say, you should be lucky Micah was here.

Before leaving the building, I’d asked one of the Hawks’ PR people for Ayla’s address. She’d trusted me with the information. I hoped she wouldn’t be in trouble now.

Lennox

Stokes was there?

Ayla

You know him?

Lennox

I know of him.

Ayla

Micah is the best.

That knowledge shouldn’t have bothered me, but my chest squeezed for some odd reason. I didn’t like that he got to see her reaction when the roses arrived and not me. It was ridiculous to feel that way, but I also couldn’t ignore the scrape of irritation.

Ayla

You’re very nonchalant for someone my household hates.

Lennox

I play in hostile environments for a living.

Ayla

So does my brother, and he always tries to use that tone to get his way.

Lennox

What tone?

Ayla

The “I’m about to tell you what to do because I think I’m in charge” tone.

Lennox

Would that work?

Ayla

Absolutely not.

Lennox

Good to know.
