“Thinking with your dick, hmm?” She whispers against my neck.

A shudder wracks my body. “Now? Yeah, I am. But only because you feel so fucking good and I’m not immune to tits.”

“There are people like that who exist?” She teases.

I miss this. “Apparently.” I wait for the men to leave, we keep lazily kissing, until the bouncer walks back and gives me the thumbs up, careful not to look in the room lest I have to kill him for seeing my face.

I quickly pull back and put on my mask then give Charlie what’s left of her shirt back and help her to her feet. She dizzily stumbles against me.

“Are you good?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “Yeah, I just need to eat I think.”

“Come on. I’ll get you food before I take you and your pathetic scooter home. I meant to teach you a lesson and ended up feasting instead.” I sigh. “Death can wait one more day. Your stomach it seems, can’t.”

“I’m fine I mean I can just DoorDash and—”

“—No captive of mine DoorDashes for her food.” We slowly make our way back to my building after I call Jenner for the all clear, and then walk into what I lovingly call the lair. It has a full kitchen, three rooms where nobody can hear you scream, and a lovely ninety inch tv. The best part is the floor to ceiling bar in the corner by the pool table. And even better than that? The steak I keep stocked in my fridge. I pour her a glass of my best Syrah, walk over to the grill and start cooking. I put plastic over my leather gloves and I keep my mask on.

She yawns, looks at the food, then at me, then slowly makes her away over to my couch and curls into a small ball. She’s asleep in seconds. I’ll wake her up when the steak is done.

I meant it.

All the words I said. About normalcy.

About what she wants.

Axel thought he knew what she wanted.

The Proctor, however, can give her what she fucking needs.

“So, what I’m gathering is, they either know Death is alive and kicking and are going to try to pull the heir to their side or they purposefully put Famine in the way knowing she’d do anything to protect Death so—” Jenner pauses. “You kidnapped her and made her dinner?”

I make a face, stand, and walk over to the wine. “She was hungry.”

“Isn’t that your best Syrah?”

“War.”

“Holy shit, man, you’re courting your hostage.” He bursts out laughing.

I wave him off. “I’m feeding her, big difference.”

“You won’t even let me near your wine cellar.” He pins me with a knowing look. “You have cameras in that cave.”

“I like my wine.”

He points at me. “You hate sharing it. I believe last time you called me a peasant.”

I smirk and take a sip. “Keep your voice down, she’s still sleeping.”

“Could be faking it.” He kicks the couch. She doesn’t move an inch. “Hmm, interesting.”
