I narrowed my eyes as I stepped closer to where she stood next to the counter.

“Writing me a note? You couldn’t wait for me to come back from the bathroom?”

She opened her mouth, then closed it again before letting out a heavy sigh.

“I didn’t want to make this weird. I thought maybe you were taking your time, hoping I would slip out.”

“No, definitely not. I was just cleaning up. I was actually hoping you were going to spend the night.”

“Spend the night?!” she gasped. “Are you crazy? We just talked about how we didn’t want to be part of tomorrow’s gossip. If people saw me leaving here in the morning, it would be on the grapevine before I even walked through my front door.”

Fucking small towns.

“I see what you’re saying. But people are going to find out sooner or later.”

She pulled her neck back with a frown. “Why? I’m not going to tell anyone—are you?”

“No, but if they see us on a date…”

Kristy started to shake her head. “No, no, no. We’re not going on a date! This was fun, but we don’t have to make it something it’s not. We’re both consenting adults—we’re allowed to have a one-night stand without it being anything more.”

Normally, that would be music to my ears. I was usually the one explaining that I wasn’t interested in dating.

But not this time.

Except I didn’t know how to disagree with her without sounding like a needy bitch.

So, I did what any guy would do when his pride was hurt. I acted like I didn’t give a damn.

“I’m glad you feel that way—that makes things a lot easier. I’ve got an early shift at the hospital in the morning—let me take you home.”

I was going to tell him I could walk home, but it was dark out and my best friend had just been kidnapped earlier that day. Better safe than sorry.

I was glad I hadn’t suggested we walk because the short car ride was awkward enough. I could only imagine what the two blocks of silence would have been like on foot.

My hand was on the car door handle the minute he pulled into my driveway.

Turning toward him with a forced smile, I said, “Thanks for the orgasm.”

His mouth turned up but the humor didn’t reach his eyes. “Anytime. You know where I live now; I’m just a booty call away.”

The thought had potential.

And talk about convenient.

“Except I don’t have your number.”

I really thought he was going to give it to me right then. I even pulled out my phone to enter it in my contacts. Instead, he replied, “Lainey has it—you can get it from her if you really need it.”

Okay then. Point taken.

I opened the door and said, “Sleep tight,” then hopped out of the Jeep.

I heard him say, “You, too,” before I closed the door and headed toward the house.
