“I’m glad you think so, ’cuz it took a helluva long time to look like this. I’d hate to think it was wasted.”
“Hell, no. Every man at the restaurant is going to wish they were me.”
“You look nice, too.” She lifted my black, blue, and white striped tie and said, “We kind of match.”
It was true. My blue button down was almost the same color blue as her dress.
I glanced down at my navy-blue suit pants.
Yeah, I wore a fucking suit to dinner.
“I guess we should have checked with each other about the color scheme of our outfits.”
“Why? I like it. It reminds me of prom.”
I chuckled and presented her with the bouquet. “These are for you.”
Her smile was genuine when she took them and inhaled the fragrance with her eyes closed.
Then she opened them and quipped, “It’s a good thing you brought flowers, or I was going to be butt-hurt. The ones you got Lainey lasted almost a week.”
I held up the bag from the grooming salon. “I got Dora something, too.”
Her emerald-colored eyes shone with, mischief? Intrigue? Confusion? as she stared at me while taking the bag out of my hands.
“Aren’t you Mr. Thoughtful.”
“I thought I was Dr. Sexypants?”
“That, too.” She inhaled the flower fragrance again, then said, “Why don’t you give Dora her present while I put these in some water.”
I’m not ashamed to admit that my eyes were glued to her ass as we walked to the kitchen.

Dammit.
Part of me had been hoping he wouldn’t bring flowers, so I’d be able to tell myself he didn’t think a date with me was as important as his date with Lainey.
But noooo, he had to bring flowers and a toy for my dog.
Why did he have to be so dang likeable and sexy?
I dated men who were either one or the other—never both.
Both could get me into trouble. I’d vowed a long time ago that I’d never be in a position to let a man hurt me. So far, I’d kept my promise.
I wasn’t going to break it now.
No matter how much I laughed when I was with him.
Or how kind his hazel eyes were when he smiled at me.
Or how safe I felt in his arms.
Or how much my dog liked him.
