No one spoke, so I stretched my neck forward and said, “Guys?”
Finally, Adam sighed and said, “It’s a long story. Suffice it to say there’s things about my brother’s job that no one’s supposed to know about. Except we found out when Lainey was kidnapped. Jess, however, was still in the dark and heard us talking about it just now. She didn’t appreciate being the only one who doesn’t know where her husband is.”
“Oh no.”
Lainey’s expression was grim when she looked up. “She feels really betrayed. Like we deliberately kept things from her.”
“Did you?”
Jade spoke up. “Yes and no. Like Adam said, it’s not something we’re supposed to talk about, so we don’t—except today. Frankly, this is on Alan. He should have been the one to tell her.”
“I’m so sorry!”
Jade cocked her head at me.
“Speaking of keeping secrets… did you know about Justin’s prosthetics?”
Her question caught me off guard, and I drew my shoulders back.
With narrowed eyes, I demanded, “How do you know about that?”
“It’s all over town.”
Chapter Thirty-Two
Kristy
It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Justin thought I was the one who had shared his secret.
Obviously, I hadn’t.
Hell, I’d barely left the house since we broke up. Other than therapy, the only place I’d gone was the bakery, and that was after it was closed. And the only people I’d seen before today were my therapist, Lainey and Conor.
I needed to find Justin and tell him I hadn’t betrayed him. He’d trusted me with that information, and I took that seriously.
I hadn’t even told my therapist about it.
“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me,” Lainey remarked.
“It wasn’t my story to tell.”
“I guess if I didn’t know before that I could trust you to keep a secret, I do now.”
I shot her a look. “Really? You didn’t know if you could trust me to keep a secret? I kept your pregnancy a secret for five months! Even when you had a baby belly and it was obvious.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” she conceded. “I already knew that. You’re like a vault.”
“But I think Justin believes I’m the one who told people. I said hi to him a few minutes ago, and he gave me a dirty look and walked away without a word. This would explain why.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Try to talk to him, I guess, and tell him it wasn’t me.”
“Who else knew?”
“Honestly? I don’t know. Maybe Rob? But I can’t imagine that he’d say something if he knew. Especially given how protective he seems to be over him.”
“Yeah, good point. How do you think people found out?”
