I got down on one knee and scratched the pup’s ears. “Aw, I'm happy to see her, too. I’ve missed this pretty girl!”
Kristy’s smile was sad, and I knew she was thinking I hadn’t missed her. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
I used the door knob to help get myself up, then I leaned down and kissed her cheek. “I’ve missed this pretty girl, too.”
“You could have fooled me with the look you gave me, today.”
“Yeah, about that… I’m really sorry. I should have known you wouldn’t say anything. It was these guys who helped me out on a hike. They watched me reattach my leg, then decided they wanted a selfie with me. Little did I know they were famous and the internet would track me down.”
“Yeah, Griff Hayes and Dylan Wilder.”
I felt my eyebrows shoot to my forehead. “You know them?”
“No, I’d never heard of them before today. But all it took was a two-minute Google search to realize how people found out about your legs.”
I winced.
“I’m really sorry, Kristy. I was hurt because I thought you’d betrayed me, and I handled it badly.”
“The fact that you thought I could do that to you is pretty insulting.”
“I know.”
“Then to make matters worse, you wouldn’t even let me try to explain myself. You said—and I quote, ‘There’s nothing left to say,’ unquote.”
“I was a total dick. All I can say is, again, I’m sorry. I couldn’t come up with any other explanation how people found out, and since you’re the only person in town I’ve ever told…”
“I’m the only person you’ve told? Rob didn’t know?”
I took a step closer and looked into her pretty green eyes.
“You’re the only one.”
There was a double entendre, and I knew she caught it.
I thought she might bolt, but instead, she moved closer.
“I’m honored.”
I leaned down, my lips hovering against hers when I asked, “Are you ready to admit it, yet?”
Her hand came around my neck, and I felt her pull me closer. “Not yet. But I’m getting there.”
Now I had a dilemma.
Did I kiss her, knowing full well it would lead to us sleeping together, and accept that she still wasn’t sure about a future with me.
Or did I step back until she knew.
On one hand, spending time together might help her figure things out faster. And my dick would be appreciative. On the other hand, being with her would only make me fall deeper in love with her, while she might decide she didn’t want more.
Self-preservation made me kiss her forehead, then take a step back. Even as my cock protested.
“You know where to find me when you’re ready. But don’t take too long, beautiful. I’m not going to wait forever.”
