And then it stopped.

I stared at the screen, my breath catching in my throat.

PATERNITY ANALYSIS COMPLETE.

SUBJECT: TRUMAI LANDRY (FEMALE, 14 WEEKS)

ALLEGED FATHER 1: K. LANDRY

ALLEGED FATHER 2: A. LANDRY

RESULTS:

Genetic markers indicate biological contribution from both alleged fathers. Probability of paternity for K. Landry: 99.7%. Probability of paternity for A. Landry: 99.8%.

NOTE: Results consistent with chimeric or mosaic DNA patterns. Possible explanation: Fraternal twin gestation with in utero absorption. Further testing recommended for clarification.

I read it again.

And again.

Genetic markers indicate biological contribution from both alleged fathers.

Chimeric or mosaic DNA patterns.

Fraternal twin gestation with in utero absorption.

My hands were shaking.

I understood what it was saying. I understood it more than I wanted to admit.

The boy—my son—had been absorbed by the girl. His DNA had become part of hers. She carried pieces of both of us because she’d carried pieces of him.

But the report also said something else.

Probability of paternity for K. Landry: 99.7%.

That was enough.

That was all I needed.

I scrolled through the report, my eyes scanning the dense paragraphs of technical explanation, the charts showing overlapping genetic markers, the notes about chimerism and twin absorption.

And then I found it.

A single page—clean, clear, unambiguous.

PATERNITY CONFIRMATION: K. LANDRY

Genetic markers support biological paternity. Probability: 99.7%.

I printed that page.

Then I deleted the rest.

I pulled the full report from the printer tray, flipped through it one more time to make sure I understood what I was hiding, then folded the pages discussing Amai and chimerism and shoved them into the locked drawer beneath the counter.

What was left was simple.
