We can’t do anything about it, though. Atticus was very clear when he explained what was going to happen when we got here. I needed to stay in the waiting room in full view of the cameras so Trigger could monitor me. None of the other brothers could come get me for fear they would also be arrested.
So I sit here and wait, as Atticus is still in the back waiting on Hades. So far he was able to get everyone else out, but they didn’t linger. I could have gone with any one of them. I’m sure Hades would prefer I be at the clubhouse, but instead I’m here because I want to see Hades. I don’t want to leave him.
My phone rings again, but this time the number is unknown.
“Hello?” I answer.
“Dr. Kingston, or should I say Miss Kingston, now that you are no longer a doctor?”
My skin crawls as I hear his voice. William Dansworth. The bane of our existence. Why can’t he drop dead already?
I took an oath to take care of everyone, but if there was ever a person who would make me tempted to break it, it was this man.
“What do you want?”
He laughs. “Oh, Evelyn. You are a peach, aren’t you? I warned you that this would happen, didn’t I? That I would take what you love from you. First, your job. Now your boyfriend and brother. You think this will disappear? I’m going to eradicate the Lotus MC from Vegas, then maybe I will set my sights on the presidency. I could probably remove them from the country altogether.”
“You sound like a crazed person. You know that, right? Your obsession is a little weak. I mean, you’re obsessed with a club that snubbed you decades ago. Not only that, but you long for a girl who tossed you to the curb like yesterday’s tuna salad. I mean, this power trip is all because of them, right?” I ask, attempting to keep the fear from my voice.
“I’m doing this because your brother doesn’t have a loyal bone in his body. He is the one who got Jimmy killed, then blamed it on me. He cost me my family. The life I wanted. So I went and made something of myself. Now I am going to take it all away from him. You didn’t have to be involved. I gave you the opportunity to see things my way, but you refused, so now you’re paying the price.”
“Yeah, yeah. Same old villain speech, different day. You know what always happens to villains, though? They die. Try not to choke on your steak and caviar, Mayor Dansworth.”
I hang up the phone, but my hands are shaking. The doors open as I look up. Hades is standing there, a slight smile on his face.
It falls as soon as he takes me in.
“What the fuck happened now?”
I shake my head, but Atticus steps out behind him. “Let’s get you two home before you discuss things in a very public and very recorded police station.”
I don’t say a word as Hades comes to me, taking my hand. We follow Atticus out to his car.
Once inside, Hades turns to me. “Tell me.”
“Nope. Not here either. We were in there a long time, and I have no clue if my car is bugged. Wait until you get to the clubhouse.” Atticus shuts down all conversation with that one statement.
The ride seems so much longer when no one is speaking. Hades is in the back seat with me, caressing my hand, but even that isn’t working. All I can think of is the words that Dansworth said.
When we finally arrive, Atticus turns around in his seat. “I’ll see you in two days, Evelyn. Be ready.”
“Don’t you want to hear what I have to say too?”
He gives me a serious look. “Is there going to be proof that I can use?”
I shake my head.
“Then no. I’d rather not know.”
I nod, getting out of the car. Hades leads me up to the clubhouse, opening the doors. Everyone is there waiting.
“Church,” he growls at Reaper.
Reaper nods as everyone tosses their phones down. Once inside, Hades holds out a chair for me before addressing the room.
“Evelyn has an update.”
I lick my lips. “Dansworth called me. He was behind this. He didn’t say it, but the fact he called tonight? He said that he gave me the choice to walk away unscathed, but I didn’t, and now I’m paying the price. He also said there is more to come and that this all has to do with Jimmy Henderson. He said you’re a liar.”
