Marie shakes her head. “Yes, of course. Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention when I was looking for you.”

“What’s up?” I ask as I usher her away from Pinky’s room.

As she jumps into our next case, I push thoughts of Pinky and the club out of my mind. My patients need me right now and deserve my full attention, no matter how much I love a good mystery.

CHAPTER THREE

Hades

“You stay here with him. We will take care of the kids. You focus on getting him better,” I hear Reaper tell Sunny as he leaves her behind in the hospital room.

“Thank you.” She sniffles before the door closes behind him.

He steps out into the hall with a grim look on his face.

“What did Evelyn say?” he asks.

“His scans are clear. She will call with an update. We should talk somewhere more private.” I nod to the nurses staring our way.

“Meet at the clubhouse.”

I nod once as I fall into line behind him, my eyes taking in everyone around us.

Now more than ever, we need to be vigilant. We are under attack, but our enemies aren’t so clear. It could be any one of these people.

The ride back to the clubhouse is quick but feels like an eternity. I hate the need for privacy when we should be taking action.

As soon as we are in the meeting room, I start speaking.

“We need to send someone to sit at his bedside. Do it in shifts. I don’t trust that someone won’t sneak in there to try to end it,” I tell him.

“I agree. If he doesn’t think it was accidental, then it wasn’t. I trust his instincts,” Reaper says.

I shake my head. “His wallet was taken. It’s nowhere at the scene, and the police haven’t found it. It’s missing. They are chalking it up to him being a biker. Maybe he didn’t have one, or it was flung so far they can’t find it, but we know better.”

“Dansworth is behind this,” Reaper mutters.

“Obviously, but we can’t prove it. So what are we going to do?”

He sighs. “I called San Antonio to see if they could spare anyone. They have their own crisis down there. Something about one of the old ladies going missing or something. I was hoping to get some unfamiliar faces up here to blend in and do some investigating.”

I hate how tired Reaper looks. Dansworth should have been dead years ago, yet here he is, coming back to haunt the club. It’s more personal for Reaper, though. This man abused his old lady for years. He is the cause of her nightmares. Until he is six feet under, Reaper won’t rest.

“What about other chapters?” I ask.

He sighs. “I’m debating who will be best. We have an in with San Antonio because Fang used to be one of ours, and Colt’s cousin is the president there. It helps that his old lady is from there too. They would be my first option, but I don’t know if they will have the availability to help. I know they have their own shit going on. The other chapters will answer the call of Lotus, no doubt, but I don’t know if I can trust them the same way.”

It makes sense. These presidents are all brothers, but they also have their own clubs and agendas. I can see where he is unsure of who he can trust.

“I can call my brother and see if he can spare anyone.”

I don’t know where the offer comes from. I doubt my brother would be willing to help me at this point. Still, it flows from my tongue easily.

“When was the last time you talked to him?” Reaper asks.

He knows the answer. He had to call Remi before accepting me into the club. I’m sure he knows all the dirty details of why I was exiled.

“Ten years,” I admit.
