He nods. “I do. Dr. Pembrooke went and tattled to human resources. So what’s happened now?”

I lean in, whispering in his ear, “Mayor Dansworth isn’t a good man.”

He pulls back and looks at me. He nods, understanding I can’t say more.

“You treated him a few days ago. Is that what’s going on?”

I nod.

“I’m actually surprised that you shared that much, and I know there’s a lot in there that you can’t say.”

“Yeah,” I mutter.

He takes a deep breath. “First, you know if you need help taking care of things in the med room at the clubhouse, I’ll come. You don’t have to handle that alone. As for the other issue, always keep Marie or Preston with you. If there’s an issue, you have them come get me immediately. In fact, we should chat with them about it so they know.”

“I don’t want them being dragged into this or hurt. It’s not fair to them or to me. Hades is doing what he can to protect me. I have to believe it’s enough.”

“You don’t deserve this. Fuck, I hate that you are in this mess,” he mutters.

“Me too.”

“We both know that I’m not a violent man, but situations like this make me think twice.”

“Don’t do something that will put you on his radar. That’s the last thing we need when this isn’t your fight,” I remind him.

“I know, but you’re my best friend. I will always want to protect you.” He presses a kiss to my head.

“You’re mine too.”

“You never explained the Hades thing. Don’t think I didn’t notice you said he is doing his best to protect you and not your brother. What’s going on?”

I feel my cheeks heat.

“Oh, you’re blushing. Evelyn Kingston doesn’t blush unless it’s something good. So tell me,” he begs, making me laugh.

“The man drives me insane.”

He rolls his eyes. “Please, we both know you want to rip each other’s clothes off.”

When I don’t deny it, he laughs.

“We kissed,” I blurt out, making his eyes widen.

“Okay, back up and start from the beginning. How did that happen?”

“It was after everything happened. When we got home, I unloaded on him. I don’t know who leaned in first really. It just happened. Then I asked him to sleep in bed with me. He’s been sleeping next to me ever since.”

“Wow. That’s a lot to unpack. Let’s start with the kiss. How was it?”

“Good enough that I’m tempted to stage another run-in with you know who so that he might do it again,” I confess.

Travis smirks. “And how did he end up in your bed?”

“I was still shaken and didn’t want to sleep alone. We haven’t done anything. Well, we talk. A lot. He’s shared some personal stuff with me. I’ve done the same. It’s like I finally know the man, and that scares me because I don’t need him in my bed anymore, but I want him there.”

“My girl’s down bad over tall, dark, and sexy,” he teases.

“I shouldn’t want him,” I admit.
