That’s when the unthinkable happens. Melanie starts to seize.
“Help! I need help! We have a seizure. I need lorazepam. Hurry!” I call out.
Preston rushes to my side as he helps me get her on the floor. Marie hands me a syringe, pushing the medicine into the IV.
The seizures stop momentarily. Then she stops breathing.
“Code blue. I need a crash cart, now.”
My heart is in my throat as I perform CPR on her. Preston runs the crash cart, telling us to clear as he shocks her. We work on her for nearly fifteen minutes until it’s finally called.
“Time of death.” I look at my watch. “Nineteen thirty-three.”
I fall back onto my ass, tears on my face.
Melanie lost her life tonight, and I can’t help but feel like it’s all my fault.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Hades
Igot his text about three minutes after the news vans showed up. I knew it wasn’t good, but I resolved to stay outside unless I was summoned.
Not that I hadn’t already texted Trigger to pull the footage.
Then Travis texted and told me to get inside as soon as possible.
I dropped everything and took off running.
When I make it into the hospital, I know shit has hit the fan. There are cameras everywhere as I keep my head down and force my way to triage. Rosie takes one look at me and buzzes me through.
Everyone in the back is solemn as they continue to work. Travis spots me and gives me a grim smile.
If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t know anything happened. I was in the parking lot and didn’t even see the woman being brought inside. I want to kick myself for missing it. I like to think I am all-knowing and I don’t miss anything, but fuck, if this whole situation has made me realize that I’m not fucking perfect.
I ignore everyone as I make my way down the hall to the doctors’ lounge. As soon as I step through, Evelyn looks over at me, sobbing.
I don’t hesitate. It takes me three large steps to reach her, pulling her up and into my arms.
“Shh. It’s okay, Princess. Everything is going to be okay.”
She sucks in a breath. “I killed her.”
“No. Dansworth killed her. This is not on you.”
She nods, tears pouring down her face.
“Come on. We are getting out of here.”
She nods, letting me pull her up and lead her from the room. Everyone stares as I start the walk down the hall.
“Hades, take her out back. I’m parked in the garage,” Travis says, handing me his keys.
I nod my thanks and hand him her keys. Then we turn, moving the opposite way.
I appreciate his forethought to save her the media circus out there. She doesn’t need to see that.
It takes several minutes to get her to his car. Once inside, I reach over and grab her hand. “I want to take you home, but Reaper is going to want us at the clubhouse.”
