Mr. Bennett is sitting behind his desk when I walk in. He points to the chair across from him.
“Have a seat, Tommy.”
I drop into it. “Am I in trouble?”
“No.”
“Then why am I here?”
He pulls my file closer and opens it. “You're a senior, Tommy. We've been going through graduation requirements.”
That doesn't sound good. “And?”
“And you're missing an arts credit.”
I stare at him. “What?”
“You need an arts or music credit to graduate.”
“I have enough credits.”
“You have enough credits in your other areas. You're still missing this one requirement.”
I lean back in the chair. “So, what happens?”
“You take an arts elective.”
“Now?”
“Now.”
I look at him. “What if I don't?”
“You don't graduate.”
Well, fuck. I rub my hand over my face. “What am I supposed to take?”
“Your schedule has a study hall seventh period.”
“Yeah.”
“There is one open arts elective that fits your schedule.”
I already don't like where this is going. “What?”
He turns the paper toward me. “Photography 101.”
I look at the course name. “Photography?”
“That's the only one open during that period.”
“I’ve never taken a picture with anything but a Polaroid, and I even suck at that.” I laugh.
“You'll learn.”
I laugh despite myself and pick up the pen. “Where do I sign?”
He pushes the form and I sign it and push it back. “Room?”
