"It's a closet."
"It's my closet." Shane drops into the desk chair and gestures toward the single other chair.
"Now, what can I do you for?"
"I need a list of weavers in Las Vegas and the surrounding cities."
"Why?" His eyebrows shoot up.
"I'm helping a client."
"With what?"
"I can't tell you."
"Why not?"
"Doctor-patient confidentiality."
"I thought that was only for real doctors."
I close my eyes. "Shane."
"What?"
"Please."
His amusement fades as he studies me for a moment before leaning back in his chair. "I can't just give you a list of names because you ask. You don't have to tell me everything, but I need to know why you're looking."
As much as Shane likes to joke, he is good at his job. Better than good. He's meticulous, observant, and annoyingly persistent. If something is hidden in this city, Shane has a better chance of finding it than anyone I know.
I take a breath. "A client of mine is having trouble sleeping, and I think it might involve a weaver. Or someone close to one."
"Why?"
"Because I've been inside his dreams."
"In the dreams, there's always a weaver controlling the chaos. The dreams don't behave like normal nightmares. They're structured. Deliberate. The weaver keeps him partially awake or wakes him completely by frightening him." I lean forward. "And there's something else. A shadow person."
"What kind?"
"I don't know."
"Human?"
"I don't know."
"Inside the dream?"
"I don’t think so?" I swallow. "That's the problem. They're always off to the side. They aren't part of the dream itself, but they're physically there with the weaver. I know it sounds crazy, but whoever this is, they're doing something to him. I think if I can find the weaver, I can find whoever is behind the nightmares."
Shane studies me closely, his thumb moving slowly along his jaw as he thinks. The silence stretches for so long that I swear I can hear the faint hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
Please. Please help me help him.
"Weavers aren't exactly common," Shane finally says. Hope sparks in my chest. "But I can't give you a list."
It dies immediately.
