I pinch the bridge of my nose. "How are you almost thirty-five and still acting like you're twelve?"
"So he is cute."
"You're fucking impossible," I sigh.
"Does he know?"
"Know what?"
Shane's grin gets wider than I thought possible. "That you're in loooove with him?" He sings the last word like we're back in middle school.
"I'm not in loooove with him, Shane."
His eyes narrow. "You're tracking down a dream monster because he had a nightmare." He points at me. "If that's not love, I don't know what is."
My mouth opens, but nothing comes out.
Because he's right; if this were anyone else, I would have contacted the authorities and left the investigation to them.
But Vincent isn't anyone else.
Vincent makes me want to take care of him. Makes me want to solve his problems and see him smile. Makes me want to make sure he never wakes up terrified again.
That's not professional.
That's something entirely personal.
"That's what I thought," Shane says smugly.
Before I can respond, there's a knock on the door and a young demon detective pokes her head inside.
"Crowley? Cap wants the report from the casino break-in."
"Tell him I'm solving something important."
"What's the problem?" She glances between us.
Shane's grin returns. "Who my little brother is in love with."
"I'm leaving." I stand so quickly my chair nearly tips over.
The detective bursts out laughing. Their laughter follows me all the way through the bullpen and toward the glass doors.
I'm almost to my car when I hear my name.
"Jay!" Shane is jogging across the parking lot. The amusement is still there, but his expression has changed into something more serious. "I'll look into it."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
Relief hits me so hard my shoulders sag. "Thanks."
"Of course."
He slows to a stop in front of me and his smile softens. "Be careful, okay?"
His seriousness catches me off guard. "Do you think something could be wrong?"
