I want to know things I'm absolutely not supposed to want to know about a client.
Jay: I'm glad you told me.
I put my phone down, but the smile remains.
I'm sitting in a police station parking lot grinning like an idiot because my client slept through the night. This is fine. Completely professional.
My phone dings again, and I pick it up immediately.
Vincent: You busy?
My heart jumps.
Jay: Not especially. Why?
A few seconds pass.
Vincent: I'm doing inventory at the bar today.
Vincent: Thought maybe I'd celebrate my first full night of sleep with a late lunch.
I read the message twice.
Is he asking me out, or is this just lunch? Does it matter?
No, it doesn't.
Vincent: If you're nearby
Vincent: And hungry
Vincent: No biggie if you don't want to.
Vincent Klein, the intimidating alpha Skinwalker who towers over almost everyone he meets and can walk into a room and make people instinctively move out of his way, is nervous about asking me to lunch.
That's so fucking adorable I might actually die.
Jay: Are you asking me out?
I can practically see him on the other end of the phone, panicking, deleting and retyping.
Vincent: Would you like a free burger?
I grin so hard my cheeks hurt.
Jay: Depends.
Vincent: On?
Jay: Do I get fries too?
Vincent: You're so greedy.
Jay: Is that a no?
Vincent: Get your ass over here, Jay.
My afternoon just got a whole lot more interesting and possibly a lot more unprofessional. I should probably feel guilty about that, but I don't. Instead, I'm already starting the car.
