"Thanks, Shane. I owe you one."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, man. This is really helpful."
There's a suspicious pause on the other end of the line, and I just know he's about to say something I don't want to hear.
"Okay, then. I have a question for you."
I close my eyes. "What?"
"Have you kissed your client yet?"
He giggles like a little schoolgirl, and I groan, rolling my eyes even though he can't see me.
"I'm not answering that."
"Aw, come on! You owe me."
"Fine." I sigh heavily, knowing I'll regret giving him even this much. "Yes, we've kissed."
"I knew it! Give me all the details!"
"I'm not giving you anything else. This is between my mate and me."
The teasing immediately disappears from his voice.
"Mate? As in... fated?"
"Yes," I growl.
There's a stunned silence on the other end.
"I'm hanging up now."
"No, wait! I have so many questions! Who kissed who first? Have you…"
"I'm ending this call. I'll talk to you later, Shane."
"I love you, bro!"
"You too."
I hang up before he can continue, because I know he'd tease me for hours if I gave him the opportunity. A second later, my phone buzzes with the promised text, and I open it to find all the information Shane managed to gather on Dany Champagne.
At the top of the message is a picture of the weaver in her human form. She has warm brown eyes that crinkle at the corners when she smiles, and dark, wild curls frame her pale face. She's smiling brightly at whoever took the picture, looking so completely normal that I find myself staring at it for several seconds.
There's nothing about her that screams, I'll drive you insane one nightmare at a time.
If I passed her on the street, I wouldn't think twice about her. She looks friendly. Kind, even. She looks like someone I might actually like.
And that's what bothers me.
Because if Trent really is behind Vincent's nightmares, then Dany doesn't look like a villain. She looks like someone who has no idea she's being used.
She looks like the perfect target for Trent to manipulate.
