“What kind?”

“A serious one.”

“That was fast.”

“It doesn’t feel fast.”

She studied me.

Malik had returned his attention to the television, although I suspected he was listening to every word.

“Frankie’s life isn’t easy,” Amelia said.

“She told me.”

“No. She told you pieces. There’s a difference.”

“I understand.”

“Do you?” Amelia leaned forward. “My daughter has spent ten years adjusting her life around what Malik needs. She doesn’t complain. She doesn’t ask anyone to feel sorry for her. But she’s tired more often than she admits, and people have taken advantage of how capable she appears.”

“I won’t take advantage of her.”

“You don’t know that yet.”

Her honesty deserved the same in return.

“Yes, I do.”

Amelia’s expression remained guarded.

“Because a man knows himself,” I said. “I prefer honesty. It’s easy, natural, and right. Your daughter is in good hands. And you’ll have more than enough time to see that.”

Amelia’s face softened. “You better keep your promise.”

“I will.”

Frankie returned carrying a blue bag.

“I knew it.” She looked at me. “What did she ask?”

“Nothing I couldn’t answer.”

“Mama.”

“He did fine.”

I checked the time. Nearly two and a half hours had passed since we arrived. I had rounds early the next morning, and remaining longer risked making the first meeting more exhausting for Malik than enjoyable.

“I should go.”

Disappointment crossed Frankie’s face but then she covered it.

“You have work?”

“Early rounds.”

She nodded. “Okay.”
