“Where’s Boone?” I asked before I could stop myself.

“I can’t tell you that, but I can tell you he asked me to check on you.”

I nodded, pissed at the warm feeling spreading through my chest.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

I laughed. “I know you’re not askin’ for yourself. Tell Boone I’m fine.”

His lips lifted into a half smile before he turned serious again. “We can’t be seen together, so I need to go. But like I said, if you feel threatened, call me.” He pointed to the card. “Don’t lose my number.” Then he headed to the end of the hall and walked through a door that looked like it opened to the kitchen.

I stared at the door for several seconds before I returned to the table. Garrett gave me a worried look as he watched me sit down.

“I was about to check on you. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I said with a laugh. “Can’t a girl pee without bein’ timed?”

“You were in there longer than a pee should take.”

“I didn’t know there were specified peeing times. Did they teach that at the academy?” I teased, then I gave him a tight smile. “I was fine. I just needed a moment. It’s been a day.”

He nodded. “Maybe we should have just gone home.”

“No,” I said. “This was good. I needed to get out.” I drew a breath then asked, “Garrett, what about the guy who tried to kidnap me Saturday night? No one’s mentioned anything about him.”

“They think he was part of Voss’s crew.”

“But he didn’t know Selena’s name.”

He frowned. “They think that was his way of trying to trip you up.”

“I got the impression he really didn’t know Selena’s name.” I leveled my gaze with his. “Does that mean they’re not going to look for him?”

“They’ll still look.”

“But not very hard,” I said.

“They don’t have any leads to follow.”

I let that sink in, then asked the question I’d been dying to ask since Garrett had confessed my report hadn’t been entered into the system. “Why did Nate let his brother handle my report?”

“I told you. He was lookin’ at overtime, and the department’s been on our ass about it. Cal was workin’ the day shift and was tryin’ to do him a favor. But then he got busy and it slipped his mind.”

“Do you really believe that?”

He was quiet for a moment. “I don’t know what to believe anymore.”

“Do you believe Nate?”

He gave me a blank look. “Why wouldn’t I?”

Maybe Agent Crawford was right. Maybe I couldn’t trust Garrett to keep my secret.

“Say…” Garret said as we got up from the table. “What do you say about paying Granny a visit?”

I couldn’t hold back the laugh that bubbled up. “You want to go to Granny’s?”

“You actually like hangin’ out with her, and she’s worried. She’s called me ten times yesterday, askin’ about you. She needs to see you with her own eyes.”
