“What do you mean?”

“That’s Dario Voss. And he’s a stone-cold killer.”

Chapter Twenty-Three

The blood drained from my face.

He turned in his seat to face me. “Iris, I need you to think hard—did you do or say anything to make this man think you might have something of his?”

I stared at him, my heart beating hard against my ribs, then shook my head.

“Are you sure?”

“I don’t think I said anything to him,” I replied, my voice shaky.

“How close are you and Selena?”

I made a face. “We used to be really close, but not so much the last several years.”

“So why would Dario Voss be interested in you?”

“I don’t know,” I said, on the verge of a panic attack. Then it hit me. “Oh.”

“What?”

“I’ve been asking around about Selena, trying to find her. Maybe he found out?”

He handed me back my phone. “You can’t go back to your apartment, Iris. You need to stay somewhere else until this is finished.”

“I’ve stayed with Garrett the past two nights, but that’s not a long-term solution. I’m sleeping on the sofa.”

“Can he protect you? Do you feel safe there?”

“Yeah.”

“Then plan on stayin’ there again tonight.”

“Okay.”

The car in front of us pulled forward, leaving us third in line.

So, Dario Voss was a dangerous man. Then again, I’d known that for a while now. I’d seen him murder me. Twice. And there’d been absolutely no remorse. You couldn’t get more cold-blooded than that. So why did this bother me so much more?

Maybe because a Texas Ranger was freaked out on my behalf.

Oh, God. I’d been working under the assumption that if I stayed away from Selena, I’d be safe, but I couldn’t count on that. They knew where I lived, which meant they were actively looking for me.

I glanced at Boone, who was staring out the windshield, his jaw set. I couldn’t help wondering if I should tell him the truth about my visions. But Boone seemed like a practical man, and I didn’t want him thinking I was crazy. Especially if I wanted to get more information out of him. Better to keep it to myself. As long as I wasn’t kidnapped, I’d be fine.

Probably.

And who better to protect me than a Texas Ranger and a deputy sheriff?

The next two cars moved pretty quickly. When Boone pulled up to the window, he gave me a questioning look.

“A large coffee with cream. And two glazed donuts.”

He turned to the teenage girl in the window and gave her my order, then asked for a large black coffee and two donuts of his own.
