He relaxed again. “It’s a shame, really. I thought there was some real chemistry between you. You were great on camera together.”

“But once again, we aren’t the main characters in your farce of a documentary. You are.”

“I’m the narrator. You’re the story.”

“You’re the unreliable narrator. Creating a story out of nothing with bits of truth and a whole lot of lies.”

“Which bits are the truth?”

“Again, my answer is you tell me.”

“Jake believes his brother was murdered. He left because Casper refused to give him access to Lloyd’s computer, where he was hoping to find information on what Lloyd was working on.” He leaned back in his chair. “How am I doing?”

Was it possible that Gerard didn’t know Casper had booted Jake from the island?

But Beau knew. He’d been there when Jake radioed the RCMP vessel. What did it mean that he hadn’t told his boss?

This brought her back to the question of who had tried to break into her room in the early hours of the morning. And why.

She gave Gerard the only answer she could. “I wouldn’t know. Jake left without a word and hasn’t contacted me.”

“Surely you and he talked about it before you returned to the island? You didn’t just spend the weekend screwing his brains out?”

“So what if I did? He wanted comfort. I gave it.”

His eyes narrowed. “I don’t think so.”

“Are we really going to waste time talking about my sex life? I thought this was going to be a scientific expedition.”

“It’s a documentary with a dose of reality TV. Your sex life is fair game.”

“Well then, it’s too bad you didn’t get more than the one dive with Jake on film, because I’m not fucking around with anyone else on the team.”

“That’s actually one of the things I wanted to talk to you about. I just got off the phone with Jake. I invited him to return for filming tomorrow, and he agreed. Will that be a problem?”

She didn’t have to feign shock. This was not on the list of things she wasn’t supposed to know. She legitimately didn’t know whether what he said was true or not.

“I’m angry with him.”

“Will it be a problem?”

“Of course not. I’m a professional here to do a job. But don’t think you’re going to be filming a grand reunion for your reality TV show.”

Gerard grinned. “Even better. As I said, you’ve got great chemistry.” He stood. “Take the rest of the day off. Tomorrow, we film.”

“What are we filming?”

“It’s a surprise. We’re going fully unscripted.”

“We’re going live?”

“Not possible. Casper has the island locked tight as far as signals go.”

“What are you planning, Gerard?”

“Don’t worry your pretty little head about it.”

“Please tell me you’re going to be this condescending on camera so I can call you an asshole in front of all your fans.”
