Mia smiled at him as he looked down at his hands.
“That was Cerberus,” Mia answered with a chuckle. “For real this time.” She turned and wrapped an arm around Lucas’s waist. “Not some silly dog.”
He chuckled then frowned as he looked off towards the golden tomb of Feng. “Do you think she’s gone for good?”
Mia frowned and glanced around. “All of this is still here.” She motioned around, then turned to Lei, who was still looking at Lucas as if he was going to grow two more heads again.
“Lei, you said we needed to be in here. Why?” She walked over and took her brother by his shoulders, shaking him from his fear.
Lucas noticed how much alike they were. Mia was a few inches taller than her older brother, but still, he could see the similarities.
Lei glanced at Mia. “The scroll.” He glanced around and frowned. “The first written text. What gives djinn the powers. We must find it. If we can’t destroy Feng, it must burn.”
Mia stilled. “Why?”
“We have to destroy her,” Lei answered, no longer giving Lucas his attention.
“Why?” Mia and Lucas asked at the same time.
Lei turned to Mia. “To break the cycle. Feng Li must never be able to control this or any other world again. It’s what the elders saw, that day long ago. If she’s allowed to gain the djinn powers again and she is released, she will consume everything.”
Just then a soft laughing echoed in the cavern as teal-colored smoke started to seep from the center of the destroyed statue.
Lei shook his head. “You haven’t stopped anything,” Lei said, glancing up at the beam of light shining in through the opening.
Suddenly, the ground under their feet shook violently.
Feng’s laughter grew and filled the space so loudly, that he cupped his hands over his ears.
“Thank you, son of Rhea and Typhon for destroying my tomb and releasing me,” Feng said. “It’s a pity I didn’t get all my powers back. I’ll have to make do with what I did get.”
Suddenly, that feeling in Lucas’s gut grew. He turned and looked at the destroyed golden statue just as the smoke shifted into a woman, a real woman. She walked out of the large gash his enormous claws had caused and headed right towards the blue beam of light.
She wore a long flowing dress, like the many Mia had been wearing. Only the hem of this one was somehow made of smoke, floating inches above the ground of the cave.
“Now, I can join my lover once more.” Feng smiled as she stepped into the bright blue beam of light. Lifting her face to the rays, she called out, “Moros, my love, I am free.”
Lucas and Mia screamed as the woman shot up into the beam of light and disappeared.
“Shit,” Lucas said at the same time Mia did.
Chapter Thirteen
“Did we just really let Moros’s lover free from her prison?” Lucas asked for the third time in the past hour. “One that had held her for thousands and thousands and thousands of years?”
“Yes,” Mia and Lei answered in unison.
“I didn’t know Moros had a lover.” Lucas put his head into his hands.
“I didn’t either,” Mia answered.
The three of them sat in the main library in the caverns. Mia had conjured up some coffee and fried chicken, which she was craving for some reason.
Her powers were still there, but she was feeling very drained, like she’d just run a freaking marathon. And she hated running.
She heard Lucas’s stomach growl, but he shook his head each time she offered to get him something to eat.
“So, basically, instead of defeating darkness, we gave it back its girlfriend?” Lucas groaned.
