I pulled him into my arms and squeezed him against me. “How was the gig?”

“Ugh.” He practically deflated as he pressed his hand over my stomach and then rubbed up toward my chest.

“That good, huh?”

“It was a wedding with an open bar that created so much drama because apparently the ex-fiancé of the groom thought it would be a good idea to show up as the date of the best man, who also happened to be cousins with the bride.” He shook his head as if just thinking about it was too chaotic. “It was a mess…”

It sounded like a reality TV dream come true.

“Let’s just say not everybody was a jolly drunk, and no matter how upbeat the music I put on was, someone always ended up crying. Who would’ve thought the chicken dance would end up being somebody’s song?”

I cringed at the mental image. “That does sound dreadful. Did they at least pay well?” I tried to never get involved with his finances because it wasn’t my business. I didn’t need to know details, but it sounded like he needed a big bonus for that one.

“Yeah, it was fine, but I’m glad to be home.” He froze and then tacked on, “I mean, here.”

I didn’t mind his slip of the tongue, but he obviously did. If he wanted to think of me as home, I was happy for it. “You want milkies to fall asleep, my sweet boy?”

“More than anything.” He cuddled deeper into me and threw his leg over mine. A second later, he latched on and suckled himself to sleep.

The next morning, I got up first and made him breakfast. Just as I knew it would, the scent of bacon had my sleepy boy ready for the day. I was about to sit down with him when he hopped up from the table and grabbed his keys. “I’ll be right back, Daddy.”

We hadn’t even eaten yet. “Where are you going?”

“Nowhere.” He ran straight toward the door. “I forgot something in my car.”

When he came back up, he was holding up his hair brush. “Got it!”

“Ya know, you can leave one of those here.” I was actually looking forward to the day when he had clothes and toothbrushes and himself here every day. “I can clear out a drawer or two.”

He just shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal. “I’ll think about it.”

I wasn’t sure how to read the “I’ll think about it.” Did that mean he wasn’t sure he wanted to or was it specifically about a brush? I was a comb guy, but I knew that some brushes could run high, so maybe he was just being frugal.

Or maybe I was just reaching.

“So much bacon.” He pulled the entire serving plate in front of him and then grabbed a piece. “I’mma eat this all!”

I smirked. “How ‘bout this? For every piece of bacon you have, you eat a piece of fruit.”

He furrowed his brows. “Daddy, I just want bacon.”

“Bacon and fruit.” I wasn’t gonna cave on this. “I didn’t make you eat anything that grew from a plant last night, so...”

He thought for a minute. “But the cookie?”

I gave him my best Daddy glare and shook my head.

“Fine, Daddy. I’ll eat bacon and fruit.”

We didn’t have any plans for the day, so we enjoyed a leisurely and very domestic breakfast that turned into morning sex. Zero complaints outta me.

His phone pinged a while later, and when he checked it, he let out a long sigh.

“You have to go back to work this afternoon?” He had a tentative gig to sub in for someone who was having travel delays and might not make it back in time.

“It looks like it.”

I didn’t want him to leave, but he loved working. “May there be no exes there.”
