“It’s not the same thing.”

“Why not?”

“Because I baby-trapped him.”

My sister pursed her lips and sighed. “Avs, I love you, but you’re making this into nothing. Nolan loves you.”

I felt the tears fall, and my sister jumped into action to get the tissues. I dabbed at my eyes, and Gemma rubbed my back soothingly. I leaned into my sister. This is what I needed from her last week. I needed her to comfort me.

“Can I blame this on pregnancy brain?” I asked.

She wiped away my tears and shook her head. “No, I think you need to grovel. Nolan looked so sad when I showed up tonight. Like he was waiting for you. I’ve never seen him look that way before.”

I felt an ache in my chest. “I’m scared I’m gonna lose her, and then he won’t want me anymore.”

“Her?”

“We’re having a girl. I was going to tell you at dinner, but then you ditched me.”

She gave me a sheepish look. “I’m sorry. I was a complete space cadet. You have every right to be mad at me.”

“I AM mad at you!”

She slapped my arm. “You’re supposed to say ‘No, Gem, it’s okay, you’re my sister, and I love you.’ I’m trying to apologize.”

“Geez, who raised you? You suck at apologies.”

“You did. So do better with your actual kid.”

I frowned and held my growing stomach with care.

“Aw, Avs, I was just teasing.”

“What if I had lost the baby?”

“Stop thinking about it!” my sister exclaimed. “If it happened, you and Nolan would have gotten through it together. He’s always been there for you.”

“He’s always put my pieces back together.”

She helped me up. “Go home and do some groveling. If he’s still mad, you could always get down on your knees and—”

I fixed her with a glare, and she burst out in laughter.

“What? I’m not wrong, am I?” she asked with a cheeky grin.

I continued to glare.

“Are we good?”

“You might need to grovel a little.”

She pulled me into a hug. “I’m sorry. My phone died, and then I fell asleep. I’m sorry I wasn’t there, but I will be going forward, okay?”

I nodded. “I still need you, Gem. You’re my sister.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll do better.”

I pinched her side. “You better, jerkface.”
