I sighed. “Sorry.”

“S’okay baby, the brewery’s your life’s work, just let me take care of you when you get home.”

I turned in her embrace, and she kissed me slowly. Her lips on mine were soft and gentle, like she was teasing the stress out of my body. Things had shifted between us since we had that fight at the cabin that almost ended our marriage. I would make damn sure she was mine forever. Avery was my end game, and I was never getting married again.

I pulled away from her kiss and pressed my forehead against hers. “Love you.”

She smiled. “Love you too.”

I gestured to her outfit. “You didn’t have to wait up for me wearing this.”

She brought my hands up to her swollen breasts. “I wanted to. You want to ring in the new year, right?”

I groaned. “Fuck, baby…”

She smirked at me. “Yes, please.”

“You’re a naughty girl.”

She shook her head and bit her lip seductively. “No, I think I’m a good girl.”

I laughed. “You want to be a good girl and ride this dick?”

She nodded enthusiastically, and soon we were tumbling down into the pleasure of each other again and again. Fucking my wife into the New Year? I think it would be a new tradition.

Chapter Twenty-Three

AVERY

I glared at Nolan for the tenth time this morning. It was the second week of January, and we were finding out the gender of our baby. It was safe to say he was nervous.

His knee shook next to me as we sat in the waiting room, waiting for my name to be called. I put a hand on his knee. “Stop,” I hissed.

The woman across from me gave me a wry smile. “First baby?” she asked.

“How could you tell?” I joked.

She nodded to my husband. “Dad looks nervous.”

“Sorry,” Nolan muttered.

I shared an amused look with the other woman and slipped my hand into Nolan’s. He relaxed at that. I didn’t realize until I moved in with Nolan how high-strung he could be. He carried the weight of the world on his shoulders when he didn’t have to. I tried to take that burden from him, to show him we were a team, but the old man was stubborn.

He kissed my temple. “Sorry,” he whispered in my ear.

“S’okay.”

“I really want to find out what we’re having.”

I couldn’t answer because the nurse finally called us back. We went into the room together. Nolan sat in the chair next to the examination table while the nurse checked my vitals and asked me how I was feeling. We waited a bit until the ultrasound tech came in.

“How are you feeling?” she asked.

“Tired, but good,” I said.

“Okay, if you lift your shirt, I’m going to pour the gel on, and you can get a look at the baby,” she said.

I did as she asked, and Nolan held my hand as we looked at the grainy screen where we saw the tiny being growing inside me. We had the sonogram from my first appointment on the fridge, but this was different. It was like Peanut was finally real to us.
