He smiled at me and brushed my hair behind my ear. “That’s what I love about you.”

“What?”

“You put everyone else’s needs before yourself.”

I glanced at the clock. “I gotta go. Don’t stress about the nursery, okay? We’ll do it together.”

He nodded, and I kissed him one last time before getting out of the car. Only to come face-to-face with my students loitering outside the building. They definitely should be in class right now.

“Oooh, Miss J, is that your boyfriend?” one of them teased me.

“No! That’s my husband,” I teased back. “Don’t you have to be in class?”

“Gym class,” they said.

I crossed my arms over my chest. “Uh-huh, so shouldn’t you be running on the track? Not out here loitering.”

“Yes, Miss J,” they groaned in unison.

I gestured behind me. “Go on. Get back to class before Coach Kyle has something to say about it.”

They groaned but did as I told them to and walked back around the building. I shook my head as I walked into the building and to my classroom. The bell was about to ring for the next period, and I really needed to pee. It felt like I always had to pee lately. Norah seemed to love sitting on my bladder.

I was washing my hands in the bathroom when Helen walked in. She smiled at me. “Hey, how did it go?” she asked.

I gave her a big smile. “Awesome. Baby’s perfect, and Nolan’s already planning on painting the nursery as we speak.”

She squeezed my shoulder. “I wanted to ask you, you guys are good, right?”

“Why wouldn’t we be?”

She sighed. “Well, your wedding vows…”

I cocked an eyebrow at her. “What?”

“Your vows felt very stilted. You didn’t talk about how much you loved each other, and I know you do.”

I sighed. “Yeah, we hashed that out on our honeymoon.”

Her face transformed from concerned to happy, and a smile spread across her dark complexion. “Oh, good! I was worried you only got married because of the baby.”

“Well, Nolan’s not very good at expressing his feelings.”

She snorted. “I hear that. Is that a brewer thing? Because Allen, I love him to death, but sometimes it’s like pulling teeth to get him to tell me anything.”

I nodded in sympathy. “Hmm. Maybe.”

She surprised me by pulling me into a hug. “I’m glad for you. You deserve happiness; you both do.”

I hugged her back and laughed as my bump brushed up against her flat stomach. “Sorry, I’m getting bigger by the minute. I better get to my classroom before those animals tear it apart.”

She laughed. “I hear that!”

I dried my hands under the dryer and walked back to my classroom just as the bell rang. I had some stragglers come in after the late bell, but I was too happy to reprimand them. I had a hard time focusing during the rest of the school day.

After the last bell rang, I did prep work and graded more papers. Tyler Mathews’ paper was the last I looked at, for a reason.

I jerked at a knock on my classroom door. I looked up and was surprised to see the teenager in question standing in my doorway, looking nervous.
