“I feel terrible,” Veronica admitted.
“You want me to call them and cancel?” Olivia asked.
Veronica shook her head and sat up. “Nope, I’m not canceling a client last minute. Wish I didn’t feel like I was gonna puke again.”
“It’ll pass,” I told her, not looking up from my spreadsheets.
“Are you sure, V?” Olivia asked.
“I haven’t told Alex or Eddie I’m pregnant yet. They’ll treat me like glass.”
I smiled. They were rather protective of her, but they meant well.
My phone vibrated on the desk, but I tried to ignore it as I crunched numbers. It kept vibrating, and Veronica and Olivia were already distracting me too much anyway, so I picked it up.
I scowled when I saw a text from Seth.
SETH: Gotta reschedule. Can’t take her this weekend.
“Asshole,” I seethed.
I didn’t realize I said that out loud until Veronica and Olivia looked at me in alarm, and Rosie started to cry. Because of course she did. She had been fussy all day.
I took her out of her stroller and rocked her in my arms, but she wasn’t having it.
“What’s wrong?” Veronica asked.
“She’s just fussy. Huh, baby?” I asked my daughter.
“Mommy,” Rosie said as she promptly pulled on my hair. I loved my daughter, but the hair-pulling had to stop.
I unclenched her fingers from around my hair. “No, baby. Hurts Mommy. Ow! Okay?”
“Otay,” she said and laid her head on my chest.
Safe to say I wasn’t getting any more work done today.
“Are you okay?” Olivia asked me.
She and Veronica peered at me in question.
I sighed. “No. Seth was supposed to pick her up and take her for the weekend. I’m sorry, I gotta cancel tonight.”
Rosie perked up her head. “Da-da here?”
I stroked her head. “No, baby. Daddy’s at his house. You’ll see him later.”
God, I hated Seth for doing this to her.
“Bring Rosie!” Veronica said. “Logan can’t get a sitter again, so I’m bringing Liam. It’ll be fun.”
Despite the fact that Seth was a diehard hockey fan, I’d never been to a game. My family was more football fans than anything else. Veronica had invited me to the game tonight since I was supposed to have the night to myself. I would have much rather spent the night baby-free playing Dragonspire, but I wanted to spend time with V.
I shook my head. “Let me try my sister. Rosie’s too cranky today.”
“Gimme that sweet little baby,” Olivia said.
I wanted to kiss her when she took my daughter. Olivia knew when people needed something and was more than willing to step in. I’d take all the help I could get right about now.
