“Where’s V?” I asked.

“She went home early. She’s not feeling good.”

“Damn, sorry. I didn’t mean to put you out.”

“Damn!” Liam repeated loudly.

We both cringed and tried not to laugh. If we laughed, he’d know that was a bad word, but if we pretended not to hear it, maybe it would be okay.

“Bye, Liam. It was fun watching hockey together,” Lily said to him. “You be a good boy for your uncle, okay?”

He nodded. “Bye, Lily!”

Lily smiled, and then she took her phone out, and I saw she was calling up a car service.

“Let me drive you home,” I offered.

She waved me off. “It’s no trouble. I have to go to my sister’s first.”

“I’ll drive you. Consider it payment for watching Liam for me.”

She chewed on her lip for a moment, but then she nodded. “Okay.”

“I promise I’m not a serial killer.”

She laughed. “That’s what a serial killer would say!”

“Well….” I trailed off, and we laughed. “Come on. Help me wrangle him into his car seat, and I’ll take you to your sister’s.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

Chapter Six

LILY

Getting into a car with a man I barely knew wasn’t a smart idea. But from the moment I met Logan, something about him felt familiar. Like we knew each other already, but that was impossible.

The only reason I got in the car with him was that Veronica liked him, and I sensed his desperation as a fellow single parent. The man looked exhausted. I knew that look. I’d worn that look since the moment I found out my husband was cheating on me.

“Thanks for hanging with him tonight,” he said after we had been driving for a few minutes in silence.

“No worries.”

“Sorry V bailed on you.”

Veronica should have stayed home tonight. She struggled all night, going back and forth to the bathroom. I was the one who told her to leave. It pained her to do it, but she looked worse for wear. I’d have to see if I could find my relief band or get her those morning sickness lollipops that helped me when I was pregnant with Rosie.

“Oh, it’s okay. She didn’t want to, but she wasn’t feeling great tonight.”

I paused before I mentioned her pregnancy. I wasn’t sure if Blaise and her had told anyone yet. She said Blaise and Logan were close, but I didn’t want to divulge her secret.

“Is it because of the baby?” he asked.

“Yeah…I didn’t want to say anything if you didn’t know.”

The corners of his lips turned up into a smile. “Yeah, Blaise was too excited not to tell me.”

“He’s going to be a good dad.”
