“Can I tell you a secret?”
“Yeah?”
“Your bed’s super comfy, so I kinda want to stay.”
He tried not to laugh. “Thanks for everything tonight. I owe you. Seriously, I’ll treat you to a nice dinner to thank you. Wherever you want.”
“I’m an easy gal. All I want is pizza, beer, and a night to myself playing video games.”
“Well, once I figure out my nanny situation, maybe I can help with that, too.”
I smiled. That sounded amazing. I didn’t need a fancy dinner. I was content with my controller and a night to myself in front of a video game. Or with my favorite comic book open in front of me. I never needed fancy.
It wasn’t a lie that Logan’s bed was comfy, but that wasn’t why I wanted to stay. I couldn’t stand to see his nephew so hurt. So instead of leaving like a normal person and sleeping in my own bed, I fell asleep next to a stranger.
Chapter Eleven
LOGAN
I woke up to a tiny foot against my head, not an uncommon practice when I brought Liam into my bed. I eased him into a different position, and that’s when I noticed the other form in my bed.
Lily lay asleep in the bed with Liam in between us. She had one hand outstretched toward Liam protectively and the other behind her head underneath the pillow. Her blonde hair was spread across the pillowcase, and she looked so peaceful.
I hadn’t expected her to stay last night. Once we got Liam back to sleep, I was sure she’d leave. That’s what I would have done.
I cringed as the memory of what we had been doing before he woke up came rushing back. Dammit. I shouldn’t have kissed her. I didn’t regret it by any means, and she had been eager to be beneath me, but Liam cockblocking us was a sign from the hockey gods that whatever we were about to do was a bad idea. Blaise would use my nuts as practice shots if he found out.
I ran a hand down my face. I didn’t want to tell her it was a mistake, but I had to nip it in the bud. Finding out she was a gamer made her a hundred times hotter in my book. And she played Dragonspire, of all the games? It was like she was my dream girl. But like a dream, it was unattainable. It was Liam and hockey for me; nothing else could take up space in my life.
Liam stirred and crawled back over to Lily. Her eyes fluttered open, and she let Liam snuggle into her side. Our eyes met, and she gave me a sleepy smile. “Hi.”
“Morning. You want breakfast?”
She nodded and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. “I should get going. Crap. I never told my mom I was staying over.”
She mentioned she lived with her mom, and I imagined that was annoying. If my mom was still alive, I’d have her living with me, far away from the sperm donor. Sometimes I was glad Mom never lived to see Rose end up with an asshole like our father. Although if she had, she could have warned Rose before it was too late.
“I’m hungry!” Liam piped up.
“Then come on, little man,” I told him. “Let’s go fix breakfast for our guest.”
Liam barreled over me and ran into the kitchen. Lily laughed, and I shook my head as I went into the kitchen to find my nephew. I sat him down at the kitchen table and gave him some dry cereal while I started the coffee.
Lily walked into the living room, now dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved striped shirt. She had pulled her hair up into a ponytail, and my hand itched to pull it out and run my fingers through her silky blonde locks.
Yeah, I couldn’t think about that stuff.
She went into the living room and came back with her half-drunk glass of wine and my beer from last night. She poured the wine down the drain and set the glass on the counter. She poured out the beer and searched for the recycling.
“Don’t worry about that. I got it.”
“Do you want help with breakfast?” she asked.
I poured two cups of coffee into mugs. “Nah. Let me make it as a thank you. Milk’s in the fridge, and sugar’s in the cabinet above your head.”
She wrinkled her nose. “Oh, I drink it black.”
I made a face back at her. “Gross.”
