She cries out, high and frantic.
I reach forward and wrap my hand around her throat, angling her back to me and forcing her face towards mine. I still inside her before I move slowly. “I’ll only ever think of you too. I’ll only ever want you.”
Her eyes soften as the words sink in. For a split second, I worry I’ve said too much. But she smiles and nods her head, as if to say, I feel the same, I’m with you.
It’s like our own fucked-up way of saying goodbye to each other.
We give the moment the space it deserves before I start again, not holding back. Her skin bristles as she comes again, and fuck, fuck, fuck, I’m on fire. The feel of her, the way her body goes slack but still holds on … I’m gone. I groan, low and guttural, pulling out just in time to release all over her ass. I rest my forehead against her back, both of us catching our breath, the ocean rocking us gently.
Finally, she speaks, voice wrecked. “Are there definitely sharks in here?”
“What?”
She smirks. Her bratty grin fucks me up every time. She dives into the ocean, the fucking lunatic. My chest loosens, and I laugh, enjoying watching her flit about the ocean, diving under and floating on the surface. It’s the most free I’ve seen her.
Have you ever felt true happiness and heartbreak simultaneously? That’s what I feel at this very moment. Complete happiness at her joy; total heartbreak at our fucked-up situation.
I’ll spend the rest of my life wanting her. Every second, every minute, every hour of the day, I’ll want her. The way our bodies respond to each other is chemical, beyond physical, beyond anything considered normal. Don’t even get me started on how she knows every dark secret, every cruel corner of my psyche. She sees it all and still chooses me.
Isn’t it fucked up that two of the world’s most elite killers somehow fucked life back into each other?

The sun glints off Raine’s skin as I steady the jet ski and help her climb back on. She swings one leg over the seat and settles facing me, fastening her bikini top on.
“So,” she says lightly. “What do you want to do now?”
“Remember when you asked me if I ever think about living a normal life?” I ask.
“Yeah.”
“Well, you never answered it.”
I watch a water droplet slide from her hairline down the center of her face, collecting at the tip of her nose. It takes everything in me not to lean forward and kiss it away.
“No point speaking it into existence,” she says, wringing water from her hair. “Fantasy’s always better than reality anyway.”
“Nah. Not always.”
Her smile fades into something softer. “What are you saying, Soren?”
Our eyes lock. And it’s right there, this thing sitting between us, but we’re both too chickenshit to say what it is we’re feeling. The mission is almost over. When this ends, so do we.
Unless …
“You could come with me.”
Her breath catches, and her eyes shine. “I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“I can’t spend my whole life running. They’d find me.”
“Isn’t it better to run than live as their prisoner?”
I could protect her. I want her to have her freedom, to find some semblance of a life. She studies my face, her eyes darting from my left eye to my right. She’s telling me with her eyes; it’s a death sentence for us both. The Agency would find her eventually. But I can fight. I can put up a hell of a fight.
“The bitch you didn’t want to babysit,” she murmurs, “is now the bitch you want to run away with?”
