“And your birthplace,” he said.

Moon frowned. “Baltimore.”

Howler shook his head, and every part of her went cold. “No. You weren’t born in Baltimore.”

“Yes, I was,” she insisted.

“That’s what your official records say.”

Moon stared at him. “What did your file say?”

Howler looked toward the journal. “West Virginia.”

Chris straightened, and Moon’s pulse pounded in her ears. “Where in West Virginia?” Chris asked.

“Somewhere called Black Hollow.” Nobody spoke. Moon slowly looked toward the open journal. Black Hollow was the village in the drawing with the bell tower and bridge.

“No,” Moon breathed. Mayhem squeezed her hand, but Moon barely felt it. “My mother told me I was born in Baltimore.”

Howler nodded. “She lied.”

“Why would she lie about that?” No one answered. Moon stepped away from Mayhem, and the monitor immediately accelerated. He reached for her, but she pulled farther away.

“Moon,” he called.

“I need a second.” The black veins darkened, and his hands went numb again.

“Moonlight,” he warned. She turned and looked him over, immediately seeing the veins. She knew that she should go to him, but she just couldn’t breathe. Her mother had lied to her. Moon’s grandmother had known about the Silver Healer. Chris had been dreaming about Black Hollow, and Morrigan had told Moon to come home.

Moon’s knees weakened, but Mayhem caught her. This time, she didn’t fight him. She pressed both hands against his chest and closed her eyes. “I was born there.”

His arms wrapped around her. “Looks like it.”

“My mother ran from there,” she said. “And she took me with her, and now Morrigan wants me back.”

Mayhem’s arms tightened. “She’s not getting you back.” Moon opened her eyes. His expression was deadly and possessive. He looked certain, and for once, she didn’t argue.

She looked toward Tempest. “We need to find Black Hollow.”

Tempest nodded, and Chris stepped forward. “I can get us there.”

“How?” Chrome asked.

“I know the road,” she said.

“From your dreams?” he asked.

“Yep,” she proudly said.

“That’s insane,” Chrome chided.

Chris looked at him. “You planning on staying here?”

“No,” he grumbled.

“Then quit complaining.”

Chrome smiled. “I wasn't complaining.”
