I laugh a little too loud.
“It’s... possible.” My voice trails off as the idea slowly sinks in.
She smiles gently. “When was your last period?”
I open my mouth.
Close it.
Count backwards.
My brain does the math and then refuses to present the result.
“I’m not sure exactly,” I say weakly through the brain fog.
“That’s okay,” she replies in the tone of someone who absolutely knows.
She takes blood. She checks my blood pressure. She talks about the effects of stress and “big life changes” on the human body.
“Yes, I’ve had both of those recently, in spades,” I admit.
The doctor comes in next. Calm. Polished. The kind of woman who could deliver a tornado warning and make it sound like a spa update.
“Your vitals are stable,” she says. “You are a little dehydrated but nothing alarming.”
Good.
Good, good, good.
“And your test came back positive.”
I blink.
“Sorry?”
She smiles.
“You’re pregnant.”
There’s a pause.
A long one.
My brain has unplugged itself and is rebooting.
“Pregnant,” I repeat.
“Yes.”
“As in… baby?”
She nods once. “Yes.”
The room tilts.
No.
No, that’s not correct. There must be a clerical mix-up. Perhaps they’ve confused my blood with someone else’s. Perhaps there’s another June in this town who is significantly more prepared for this information.
