I don’t dress it up.
“June’s pregnant.”
The word lands like a dropped wrench.
Fletcher doesn’t react at first. He just stills completely, as if someone hit pause.
Rex watches him carefully.
Fletcher blinks once.
“Okay,” he says.
But it’s not okay. I can see the recalculation happening behind his eyes. Timeline. Dates. That night. The others.
“How far?” he asks.
“About three weeks.”
He nods, almost mechanically. “And she just found out.”
“Yes.”
Another nod.
Then he leans back in the chair slowly, exhales through his nose.
“And it could be any of us,” he says.
Rex’s jaw tightens. “Yeah.”
Fletcher drags a hand over his mouth, thinking. “Is she okay?”
That’s his first real question.
“She’s in shock,” I say. “Scared.”
“Of what?” Fletcher asks, even though he knows.
“Losing everything,” Rex answers quietly.
Fletcher’s eyes flick toward the hallway, toward the staircase at the far end.
“She thinks we’ll bail,” Rex adds.
Fletcher’s head snaps back toward us. “I’m not bailing.”
“I know,” I say.
He looks at me hard. “Do you?”
I hold his gaze. “Yeah. I do.”
He nods once.
Rex leans forward, forearms on the table. “We need to talk about reality.”
“We are,” I say.
