“You don’t look wild,” he says after a moment.

The word jolts through me.

“I feel wild,” I admit.

He leans in just enough that I can feel the heat of him across the small space between us. “Wild how?”

I hesitate.

“Like I don’t recognize myself,” I say quietly. “Like I’m… juggling too many things at once.”

He doesn’t flinch at that.

“Is that bad?” he asks.

“I’ve never been this… open.”

“To what?”

“To possibility.”

The word feels dangerous in my mouth.

He reaches out then, slow enough that I could pull away if I wanted to, and brushes his fingers along the inside of my wrist where it rests on the table.

“You’re allowed to explore what you want,” he says quietly. “You don’t owe anyone anything.”

The intensity of his words makes my chest ache.

Because I like him.

I really, really like him.

And I am absolutely still attracted to Wayne.

And Rex keeps appearing in my thoughts as a dangerous subplot I haven’t figured out how to close.

I’ve never been this girl.

I’ve never stood in the middle of three different gravitational pulls and felt my body answer all of them.

It makes me feel reckless, powerful, but also terrified.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Shall we dance again?”

June’s husky words set my heart racing. Normally, I don’t dance anywhere that isn’t the bonfire party, but with her giving me that look, chin tipped slightly down, green eyes lifted up through her lashes... She already knows the answer; saying no would be a lie.

The Mile Marker hums around us. Low lights. Brandy heat. Guitar sliding through the speakers. Tess is laughing at something down the bar, glassware clinking, the whole place breathing in and out, a single living thing.
