I feel it’s still less compared to the pain he made Sienna go through, but for the time being, it will do.

“Nice to see you here too, Sanfred,” the lie rolls off my tongue easily. A practiced skill over the years.

His eyes move over to Sienna, and I feel her stiffen near me.

“This is my girlfriend, Sienna Hayes,” I introduce her, and she passes a small smile to him. “This is Sanfred—owner of the Sanfred Media Houses and Co. We recently signed a deal with them.”

“It’s a rare sight seeing Mr. Wolfe with a woman,” he chimes, and I try not to get irritated so easily. “You must be very special, Ms. Hayes.”

“She is,” I tell him. “Now, if you will excuse us, we have a few more people to meet.”

He nods with an understanding smile. “See you later, Mr. Wolfe.”

I smile before taking Sienna away with me. God knows where Roy went to fuck off. He usually comes in handy in such situations.

“You don’t like him, do you?” Sienna asks me, seeing right through my facade.

“No,” I tell her. “He is greedy as fuck, and I hate his guts.”

She nods understanding, her eyes raking over my face.

“I know him,” she tells me. “My ex used to work for him. And if I remember correctly—he used to mention trying to get a deal with a certain someone too.”

I bite the inside of my cheek to stop my smile from growing.

“Really?” I ask, acting oblivious.

She gives me a blank stare—one I can’t really avoid. “Dom, what did you do?”

“Nothing, baby,” I cup her face and kiss her forehead. “I just did what had to be done.”

“And that is?”

I take a glass of whiskey from passing-by waiters and drink it down in one go. The burn from the liquid giving me a satisfactory feeling.

“A deal for a deal.”

Ihave strong suspicions that Dominic has something to do with my ex losing his job. When my “friends” from Chicago texted me asking for an “explanation” of why I left Mark during such a difficult time in his life, I didn’t pay much heed to it. Because I meant it when I said that I have no feelings for Mark.

His behavior with me for the past few years hasn’t been the best, and I have slowly lost the empathy I carried for him in my heart. Especially after the way he treated me once we broke up.

However, upon seeing the owner of the company where he worked, I couldn’t help but recall him mentioning that he was involved in a challenging project. He said, and I quote, “You wouldn’t understand the corporate lingo, but he is money, and I want to be the one bringing that money in for Sanfred.”

That’s all he would ever share with me, and I stopped caring once he started repeating it on loop like a parrot.

I know Dominic is fiercely protective over me. I have seen it multiple times firsthand. And today’s morning was still fresh in mind when he threatened probably his most trusted employee because they seemed to mildly harm my peace.

So, I know he is somewhat obsessed with me. But would he go to an extent to make Mark lose his job? I hope not.

“Are you the reason why he lost his job?” I ask him, and he looks at me with a raised brow.

“How do you know he lost his job?” He asks me instead.

“I have people living there telling me things I never asked to know, but don’t deflect,” I move closer to him so that he is the only one who can hear me. “Did you do it?”

He set his third glass of whiskey on the nearby table and looks at me seriously.
