“See you both then.”
“See you then,” I drone with a headshake.
“I want one hundred herkies.”
I glance at the phone, wishing I had the courage to hit the End button and pretend I didn’t hear that. Instead, I simply say, “Okay.”
She ends the call without another word.
“What will I be at?”
“Family dinner. Tomorrow night.”
Bulging, his eyes shift from his phone to me.
“Exactly.”
“Who’s catering?”
“I don’t know.” Or care. No matter what’s served, guaranteed it’ll be a shitshow. Me and Khaos at the same dinner table? After what just happened?
I study Guy as I stick a hand in my hair, my fingertips seeking out any hint of a scab.
“You don’t have to go.”
“Are you kidding me? I’ve got to see this for myself.”
Finding a tiny bump on my scalp, I rake my fingernail across it until it gives. When I pull my hand down, there’s the smallest bit of blood beneath my nail.
Thankfully, Guy’s too busy scrolling again to notice.
While I’m in my attached bathroom, rinsing off my finger, he asks, “Are you ready?”
I grimace at my reflection. Having sex with Guy right now is the last thing I want to do. After Khaos, and downstairs, I just don’t think I have it in me.
“Actually, I’m feeling kind of jet-lagged,” I tell him, stepping back into the room.
“Really? It wasn’t that long of a flight.”
“I know.”
“And you stayed in the same time zone.”
“I know. It’s weird, right?”
When he doesn’t say anything, I add, “But I’m just so tired.”
He appears thoughtful for a moment before saying, “We’ll take a nap together.”
I can’t keep the surprise from my voice as I ask, “Didn’t you oversleep?” That’s why he couldn’t pick me up from the airport. I was already in a cab when he finally responded to my text asking him where he was.
“Yeah, I did, but I was up late last night.”
“Doing what?”
“Stuff for my dad.”
“That late?”
