7 Minutes in Sea Haven

“You wear that brand?”

Damn the store-brand emblem for being visible.

“Mm-hm.” I wrap it around my stomach twice before fastening it.

“Shoot. I was hoping to see about getting him for myself next year.”

My chuckle is hollow. “Too bad.”

I like having Eighmey on my team. She’s a phenomenal stumbler, always happy to do whatever’s needed in a routine whether it’s tumbling or stunting. Because of that flexibility, she can lack boundaries. Crossing Ever’s is what lost her her teeth.

I didn’t think Ever was justified…until this moment. Hearing Eighmey set her sights on Khaos has me feeling just as irrational, if not more so.

“Any idea which way the beach is?” I ask her to distract myself.

“We’re on the right track. There’s Seymour’s shack,” she says, pointing out a moss-covered roof through the trees. It’s the same cabin Khaos and I were talking in front of, but I didn’t know it belonged to anyone.

Thankfully, we make our way back to the bonfire without issue. The same can’t be said for Khaos. Or Guy.

They’re still missing, as well as several other people.

“Where did everyone go?” I ask Eighmey.

“Some people want more than seven minutes, you know?” She laughs but I can’t. I do know. I wanted more time. Khaos—My Hunter didn’t.

“Do they stay in the woods?”

“I think most go somewhere more private.”

Private…

I scan the beach. That only leaves two options—Seymour’s shack or the parking lot.

The back door opens and closes, briefly illuminating the interior of my Ram.

“Did you get ’em?”

“You know it,” Tina says from the back seat as she deposits my and Dex’s phones onto the center console.

We both thank her.

“I can’t believe Seraphina lets you walk around with a flip phone.”

“It’s not a flip phone,” I argue.

“Might as well be. It’s ancient.”

“It’s only four years old.” Or five. I can’t remember.

Dex, in the passenger seat, says, “That’s a dinosaur in technology terms.”

“Why are you guys hiding in here anyway?”

“Khaos didn’t want to face his Prey.”

I frown over at Dex. “That’s not it.”

“Then why are you in here?”
