It’s probably a phone.
Shit. My phone.
I squint over at the clock using one eye. 3:17.
Who’s calling me at three o’clock in the morning?
Dex? Tina? Maybe they got into some trouble and—
Both eyes pop open as my heart starts pounding.
Trouble. My dad.
As quickly as I can without shoving Kota off me, I move her and get up to retrieve my phone from my pants. Except the screen is dark, and when I wake it, the only notifications are from an hour ago.
The buzzing picks up again. Is it a vibrator?
Kota’s form on the mattress is completely still.
She’s not currently using one but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have one in a drawer.
Zeroing in on her nightstand, I see something fall off and hit the floor. Whatever it is, it’s illuminating that whole area.
Her phone. Fuck.
I rush over to turn it off before it can wake Kota but stop when I get my hands on it. Not only is it vibrating, but Guy’s name is also on the screen.
Kota called him hours ago and he’s only just now calling her back. He was waiting until he was alone.
Or out of surgery, I think darkly with a silent chuckle. His ass can afford a hospital visit.
I glance at Kota, peacefully asleep.
Tonight, we both lost something. Maybe I can make it up to both of us.
A plan starts to form. It’s risky as shit but what about this isn’t?
Heading toward her door, I hit the green button but wait until I’m in my room to speak.
“Hello? Kota?”
“This is Khaos.”
“What the—”
“I need to meet with you. It’s about Kota.”
“Do you think I’m stupid?”
I don’t point out the obvious—he cheated on Kota Rhodes. That’s as stupid as it gets in my opinion.
“Dude, I’m not meet—”
“Look, I’m not interested in beating your ass again,” I lie. I’d love another chance to fuck him up. “I told you, it’s about Kota.”
He’s quiet for a second, then asks, “Is she in trouble?”
“That’s what I need to talk to you about.”
