“Nothing. He must’ve blocked me.”

Finally, something other than annoyance registers on his face—amusement. “Pussy.”

“I’m sorry,” I say because I feel like I should.

“Don’t be sorry. Just call me next time.”

“Next time I get a flat?”

“Next time anything happens.”

“Anything?”

“Good, bad, fucking boring, I wanna hear about it.”

That’s how I was with Guy and look how that turned out.

“I’m not gonna do that.”

“You’re gonna do that. You’re my fucking girl, Kota.”

He’s doing everything a boyfriend would—and more—except calling himself my boyfriend.

“Until you block me, too.”

“I would never block you.”

“You say that now because we’re…” Once again, I gesture between us.

With a small smile, he says, “I’ll say that always because I mean it.”

I raise my eyebrows. “Even when we’re not fucking?”

“Your name pops up, I’m answering. You need my help, I’m dropping everything. You call, I come. It is that fucking easy.”

It won’t be though. One day, this will be over and we’ll be having this exact same conversation with other people.

“It’s the whole reason why I learned how to drive.”

I arch an eyebrow. “To save me?”

“To be there for you.”

That can’t be true, can it?

Graham returns with Khaos’s keys, handing them over wordlessly. Khaos and I transfer my stuff from my car to his truck, then we’re off. The ride to camp would be completely silent if it weren’t for the staticky music on the radio.

I start pushing random buttons when it becomes unbearable.

“What are you looking for?

“Bluetooth.”

Khaos laughs. “It doesn’t have it. You have to use the cord in the center console.”

When he passes over his phone for me to plug in, it lights up, revealing his lockscreen.

Staring down at the picture of Khaos holding me from behind, my heart performs a full twist in my chest. I remember him taking this but I didn’t know he set it as his wallpaper.
