“Where is Guy?” With her head on a swivel, Sera might as well be a fucking owl.
“Maybe he’s having a hard time finding the dining room, too. I should go look for him.” Kota’s already half out of her seat.
“You will not. You will stay.”
I finally speak up. “Guy? I thought this was for family.”
“Guy is family. He practically raised Kota these last few years.”
“Mom.”
“What? He’s kept a close eye on you is all I’m saying.”
“Then say that. Guy’s my boyfriend, not my dad.”
Interesting she finds that so offensive when she’s Guy’s Dommy.
Sera shrugs exactly like Kota did on the stairs when she was guilty as fuck and didn’t care to hide it. “Your boyfriend’s holding us up.”
“What do you want me to do about it? I already called him twice.”
“How long do you expect him to be?”
“I don’t know. He said he’d be here. Can we just wait a little long—”
“I’m starving,” I lie.
Kota shoots me a nasty look.
My dad nods. “I as well.”
Gritting my teeth, I glance over at him.
I as well? What the fuck is he even trying to say?
Leaning back, he slaps my shoulder blade a couple times.
“Growing boys,” is his explanation, but I’m not sure if he’s including himself in that or putting the blame solely on me.
“I’m not a boy,” I correct before shrugging his hand off me.
“So much testosterone.”
“Too much,” Kota agrees with her mom.
Sera calls in one of the caterers. “We’re ready for the first course.”
First? Wow. A fancy shitshow.
Kota’s fixing her hair when the plates are placed in front of us, obviously worried about looking perfect for her pet. I mean boyfriend.
We eat the vegetable soup in silence. Kota and I do anyway. Sera and my dad whisper to each other nonstop. I thought this dinner was so we could all get to know one another, but I’m pretty sure our parents forgot they’re not alone.
They’re easier for me to ignore because I’m not facing them, but Kota’s eyes spend more time on the ceiling than her food.
“What, uh… What are you studying?” I ask her.
Sera removes herself from my dad’s ear long enough to say, “Sports management.”
