I nod.

“Goddamn. Why?”

“Eighmey, the one who got kicked, was hitting on Ever’s bodyguard.”

“Bodyguard?” Khaos whistles. “People at your school have bodyguards?”

“Just one that I know of. My friend Ever Munreaux. Her father’s the founder of Munreaux Motorcycles. She just got the bodyguard though.”

“What makes her so different?”

“Her dad loves her.”

His lips make a popping sound. “Trauma.”

“Mm-hm. Yeah. I have so much. And I’m sure you don’t have any.”

“I’m sure I don’t.” His sarcasm matches mine, but he doesn’t expand on it, leaving us in an awkward silence.

Does he? I feel like everybody has some kind of trauma in their lives.

This time he doesn’t try stopping me, yet I find myself hesitating at the door anyway. I could ask him about his childhood. I could ask him about that new bump under his eye. But what I really want to know is…

“What were you talking to Tina about?”

“Tina?” He pauses. “Why do you want to know?”

Unable to answer myself, let alone Khaos, all I do is shrug.

“You’re not gonna go kick her teeth out, are you?” he asks, humor lacing his voice.

“Never mind,” I say with none in mine before pushing open the door. It was a mistake to ask, and I’ve made enough of those lately.

The next week I’m carrying my laundry bag through the house when my dad stops me.

“What are you doing?”

“Exactly what it looks like. I’m about to wash my clothes.”

“No, no. We have people who do that now.”

“People?” Who does he think we are all of a sudden? “You mean the cleaning people? They were just here on Sunday, but they didn’t do any laundry.” Not even the towels. There are a shit-ton in the natatorium, as well as several in the gym. I grabbed those at least since most of them are from me.

“The cleaning crew only cleans the house. The dry cleaners do the laundry.”

“When do they come?”

“Dry cleaners come every Friday, lawn crew’s here on Mondays, and house cleaners are on call because Sera doesn’t like them being in the house while she’s in it.”

I roll my eyes. Stuck-up cunt.

“Thanks for letting me know there was a fucking schedule.”

“Why didn’t you pick up on it yourself? You’ve been here over a week now.”

“I’ve been busy.”

He studies me for a moment before saying, “Good.”
