The change in his tone has me turning toward him. He’s focused solely on his phone, but his face is screwed up.

“If that’s okay?”

Guy nods and says, “I’ll let everyone know.”

“Know…”

“To come over.”

That’s literally not nothing.

“Do we have to?”

“We don’t have to. But it’s more fun when we do.”

That’s nice to hear. I’m no fun apparently.

“True,” I say just to see how he handles the subtle jab. Maybe he’s not that great of a time.

Too absorbed with whatever he’s doing, he doesn’t even notice.

“But it’s the last few weeks of school and summer’s going to be insane for me. I kinda just want to relax before I’m—”

My boyfriend sighs and drops his head back like he’s conferring with my ceiling.

“What?”

He rights his head. “Nothing. It’s just… You use this excuse every time. If cheer’s so exhausting, why do you still do it?”

“Because I love it.” Cheer’s only physically demanding, it’s everything else that drains me.

“But you don’t love spending time with me?”

“I do.” Don’t I?

“This is the only time I get with you and you’re trying to dictate it.”

“I’m not dictating anything, Guy. I simply asked if we had to have a party tonight.”

“Fine. I’ll tell everyone not to come.”

He already invited people over? I didn’t even say yes.

Guilt gets the better of me, so I propose a compromise.

“You can invite a few friends.”

“And do what?”

“I don’t know. We haven’t had a game night for a while.”

His groan tells me exactly what he thinks of that idea.

“We could watch a movie in the theater.”

He finally sets his phone down to look at me.

“I choose what we watch, you do reverse cowgirl while we watch it.”
