“Is that a threat?”
“Do you want it to be?”
“No,” I say with the speed I wish I had a second ago.
The way Khaos’s right eyebrow quirks shouldn’t irritate me, but it does. Everything about him irritates me.
“That’s inappropriate. You have to know that.”
“I do,” he deadpans, clearly not ashamed.
“Do you also know I hope you fucking drown?”
With one big wave of my arms, I shoot backward. I’m not doing this. Not with him.
Khaos catches me by an ankle.
“I know you probably wish you did but don’t. You wouldn’t have saved me if you did. You wouldn’t be in here with me right now if you did.”
“I’m trying to leave.” I kick free and stand up, giving Khaos my back.
There’s a sharp inhale behind me, then, “No, you’re not.”
I spin right back around. “You do not know me.”
“I know you don’t make a sound when you come even though you practically live in an abandoned house.”
I hold up a finger. “It’s not abandoned.” The same can’t be said for me, but… This house is well looked after. That’s irrefutable. “And I didn’t make a sound with you because I was confused. I didn’t know if it was an orgasm or a sneeze.”
The noise he makes in the back of his throat sounds equally confusing. Is he in pain?
I mean, hopefully.
“I know that’s not true.”
I shrug. Could be. I don’t really remember.
Except I do. That day in the kitchen was easily one of the top five hottest moments of my life. What I don’t remember is Guy ever making me feel so reckless, so free, so…desired.
Even just now, the way Khaos was drinking me in, both before I got in the pool and after. Guy’s never looked at me like…
Like a…
Like a thief admiring a jewel.
Damn him. Why did he have to use that as a metaphor? Now it’s stuck in my head.
Is that how Khaos sees me? A jewel?
“I know you can’t be alone for more than two seconds. I know you fixate on your appearance at the worst possible times.”
I gulp.
“I know you’re ungrateful.”
Um, excuse me. “How so?”
“You have this palace to yourself, but you spend all your time in your room.”
