“Want to help me figure out the ward?” I offered.

“Might as well,” she grouched. “We need to check this room for bugs, too.”

Novak snorted. “It’s a little chilly for bugs.”

“Pests,” Briggs told the vampire.

“Hidden spying devices of the magical sorts,” Stone clarified.

“Oh. Right.”

I slapped the vampire’s shoulder. “Sometimes I think you’re a genius. Other times, though?”

“He’s fucking stupid?” Stone guessed.

“Aww. I love you too, demon.” Novak kissed Stone’s cheek.

Briggs chuckled. “How have we tolerated him for so long?”

Stone wiped his face as he glared at the vampire. “Because we fucking love the idiot. He keeps life interesting…”

Thursday, June 18th

Evening

We’d stayed in the room, hovering over Sloane long enough for her to lose her cool. When she ordered us to get out and give her a fucking minute to breathe, we’d sat around with our thumbs up our asses.

Finally, I stood up, stretching my arms over my head to ease some of my tension.

“Let’s go have a look around?”

Palmer scoffed, his head covered with a frilly pillow from the sofa. “I’m going to get some sleep. Don’t go by yourself, though.”

“I’ll go,” Brigg said, climbing to his feet from the floor. “I’m going crazy just lying around.”

“Stay in the void,” Stone advised, playing with the flaming fox in his palm.

“We will. Coming, Vamp?” Briggs asked. “We could use another nose.”

Novak raised a brow. “Is that a wolf joke?”

“No.”

“I swear—”

“Fine,” the wolf interrupted. “We’re going without you.”

As we stepped into the void and passed through the locked door, the barrier buzzed against us. It wasn’t a painful jolt, but it was much more than pushing through the bubble-like wards inside the estate in Nashville.

“That’s weird.”

Briggs rubbed his jaw. “Do you think it’s a warning, like letting them know we’ve broken out of our fancy cell?”

“I’m not sure,” I murmured, touching it once more, then I shook my head. “Nothing happened that time.”

“Fuck it. I’d rather be in the dungeon with the fae,” the wolf grumbled. “This place is fucking boring.”

I couldn’t disagree, but I also couldn’t agree. If we were in the dungeon, then we couldn’t snoop or start building a plan of action with a semi-predictable outcome.
