But not the two fuckers I was left with.

When the pale purple woman sat beside the demon, curling around his chest, I wanted to beat some sense into him. Why the fuck was he doing this? He was leading her on, knowing this would most definitely result in her death when Sloane found out.

“They need to leave,” I ordered, but the guys didn’t move. So, I turned to address the women, hoping they had some self-preservation instincts. “You need to leave.”

Palmer sat in the armchair, and I gaped at him.

“You too?”

The dusty pink woman came closer to him, but he waved her away.

“Maybe Novak is on to something, Stone? This might be playing with more fire than we’re used to.”

“A few flames won’t kill you.”

“Not anymore,” the mage commented. “But I’m just now healing from the last round of shit I brought onto myself.”

“Suit yourself,” the demon replied. “I haven’t been in any shit yet, and I’m ready to get this vacation started.”

I scoffed at his ignorance. “I’m out. There is no way I’m entertaining this without Trouble.”

Stone smirked. “You’re going to tattle, aren’t you?”

“I most certainly will not.”

I stepped into the Void, lingering in the room as I focused on the tracking magic that would lead me to my mate.

“No,” Palmer drawled. “He would never stir up the shit.”

“I’m hoping he does a good job at selling the situation,” Stone admitted. “This place is fucking boring.”

The mage stood, brushing his hands over the front of his button-down shirt. “Welcome to the doghouse, Demon.”

I shook my head, following the pull to Trouble, but I landed in an empty hall. Her scent clung to the air, a fresh reprieve from the stagnant smell of the lifeless palace. I scratched my head and frowned.

I was sure I’d tracked her the right way.

Once more, I concentrated on Sloane. All things Sloane. And pushed through the frigid void again. But she wasn’t in the dark, destroyed bedroom I ended up in. It was Vaughn’s room. I could tell by the colors and clothing. We’d have to keep him out of here or he might ask Trouble and Stone to burn the entire palace down.

Third time was the charm.

I stepped backward with a clear mind, Sloane’s voice teasing the edges of my memories. She wasn’t here either, but I heard her whispered words float through the freezing air inside the void.

So I followed Trouble to avoid trouble.

Evening

After Tilly mentioned hiding books from Alania, and Alania hiding books in her room... I decided I was going to comb every inch of this fucking palace to see what else she had stashed away. I wasn’t a thief, but I was curious.

I searched nooks and cabinets to closets and an attic type room, trying to find anything useful. I thought there might be documents or magical objects, or possibly a room full of shoes.

There was nothing.

And I meant absolutely nothing.

This wasn’t an old palace, but it wasn’t new enough to be so bare. It didn’t look like anyone other than the queen and Vaughn’s sisters lived here.
