“Mmm,” she hummed, wobbling her hand from side to side. “Maybe.”
I glanced around us, realizing we were standing in someone else’s yard. “Why did we stop here?”
“So you could ask all your questions before we get too close.” Barbie rolled her hand expectantly, waiting for more.
“You’re spending too much time with the mage,” I accused.
“You’re stalling,” she countered. “I’m ready to steal this truck and kick up dust.”
“There’s no dust to kick up,” I told her, chuckling. “You sounded like Charlie just then.”
She sighed, then growled at me. “Briggs. Are you ready or not? Because if you aren’t, then I’ll pick you up at the end of the neighborhood. You can wait by the road.”
“Fuck off.” I tugged her against my chest and tipped her chin up to meet my lips. “I want to see the look on his face when you take his truck. And then I’m going to fuck you in the back seat.”
“Then what are we waiting for?” Sloane kissed me quickly before pulling away. “Let’s go.”
She crept forward, cutting across the road as she watched the windows of Blaire’s house. I couldn’t hear anything, but she grinned, so I knew Jack was awake and filling her in, helping her steal the truck.
An interior door opened and closed, and Sloane shot into Blaire’s yard at the speed of fucking light, waving for me to catch up. I rolled my eyes as I followed.
I wasn’t sure what she was doing when I reached her, but she was sniffing at the garage door, looking certifiably insane.
“Someone is definitely going to call the cops on us,” I murmured into her mind. “Stop sniffing the fucking door.”
“Calm down. I’m just making sure Jack is gone.”
She grabbed my hand, doing that weird thing she and Vaughn do where suddenly your body is nothing but vapor. It fucked me up every time, making me feel as though I was hungover. But we promptly landed in the garage without a sound.
If we had used the void, there would have been some level of noise, from our footsteps or the frigid air blowing in the room.
Sloane held her hands out for me to stay where I was. I nodded, observing her silent movements as she removed her shoes and tiptoed across the concrete floor to peek into the truck windows.
When she circled back around to me, she put her hand on my forearm, gauging the distance between us before she misted once more…
And we landed in the front seats of Bay’s truck.
I turned, giving her a questioning expression, to which she simply shrugged like shit was just that easy for her.
“How many times have you stolen a vehicle before tonight?”
“A few,” was her vague reply.
She clicked the button on the remote, and it disappeared from her hand almost immediately. Then she shoved the key in the ignition and cranked the truck.
A full eight seconds went by at a snail’s pace…
But just as the garage door hit the three-quarters mark, we heard a shouted voice.
“Bay, Sloane is stealing your truck!”
Fucking Jack.
The light turned on, blinding me for a split second. And the interior door swung open, showing a furious Baylor Elliott standing in the frame.
Sloane did this little finger-wave thing at him before throwing us into reverse and flooring it. I grinned at my brother as I grabbed the oh-shit handle.
Bay roared at us, but Sloane didn’t care.
